Sinopse

Colonial Wars explores the multifaceted history of independence movements and their lasting global impacts.Through case studies like the American Revolution and 20th-century decolonization efforts, the book examines the intricate dynamics of power, anti-colonial resistance, and nation-building.

One intriguing aspect is the analysis of how economic exploitation, political oppression, and cultural suppression fueled these struggles.Another significant point is the assessment of military strategies and diplomatic maneuvers employed by both colonizers and those seeking liberation.

The book progresses by first establishing a framework for understanding colonialism. It then delves into specific conflicts across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, analyzing common themes and unique characteristics. The approach analyzes the motivations behind independence movements, the strategies employed, and the long-term impacts on newly formed nations.

Ultimately, the book offers a comparative analysis of these wars, highlighting factors that contributed to success or failure and underscoring the enduring consequences of colonial rule in shaping the post-colonial era.

For F*ck's Sake - Why Swearing...

Why do we love to swear so much? Why do we get so offended when others do it?

In this lively and amusing exploration of the various puzzles that surround swearing, philosopher Rebecca Roache argues that what makes swearing offensive is not really the words at all: the offensiveness lies in what we don't say. The unspoken—and usually unconscious—inferences that speakers and listeners make about each other are key to explaining swearwords' capacity to shock. Swearing is unique among etiquette breaches in that it is designed to convey disrespect—swearing packs more of a punch than failing to say "please."

Roache helps listeners understand how swearing works, celebrating its power as a communicative tool and source of humor while also taking a close and serious look at specific words—those directed at women and women's bodies, for example—that function in particular, complex ways. She also examines the often-hypocritical ways swearing can be punished or censored.

Finally, Roache helps listeners appreciate that swearing isn't always bad. When it's not used offensively, it can foster social intimacy, can help people withstand pain, and might even help us curb our violent impulses.

Edward Abbey, who never much liked Alaska, called it "our biggest, buggiest, boggiest state." To others, it has been a cure for despair. When Michael Engelhard moved to Fairbanks more than three decades ago, he was a cheechako, a subarctic tenderfoot. Gathering skills and experiences the hard way, he attained "Sourdough" status while realizing there would always be more to learn, see, and do in the land of midnight sun and auroras.

En route, Engelhard suffered frostbite, stubborn yaks, grizzly charges, trophy hunters, cold-water immersion, heartbreak, incontinent raptors, one pesky squirrel, and honeymooners from abroad. He tried to rescue a raven and explored Arctic dunes and a glacier's blue heart, and his own as he mingled with caribou on their epic journeys.

    Sigmund Freud Reflections On War...

“Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.”
― Sigmund Freud, Reflections on War and Death

Here is a classic historical psychology study by Sigmund Freud. Thoughts for the Time of War and Death is a set of twin essays written by Sigmund Freud in 1915, six months after the outbreak of World War I. The essays express discontent and disillusionment with human nature and human society in the aftermath of the hostilities and generated much interest among lay readers of Freud. The first essay addressed the widespread disillusionment brought on by the collapse of the Pax Britannica of the preceding century-what Freud called "the common civilization of peacetime. The second essay addressed what Freud called the peacetime 'protection racket' whereby the inevitability of death was expunged from civilized mentality. Building on the second essay of Totem and Taboo, Freud argued that such an attitude left civilians in particular unprepared for the stark horror of industrial-scale death in the Great War. Freud's account of the centrality of loss in culture has been seen as seminal for his later work, Civilization and its Discontents. Caught in the whirlwind of these war times, without any real information or any perspective upon the great changes that have already occurred or are about to be enacted, lacking all premonition of the future, it is small wonder that we ourselves become confused as to the meaning of impressions which crowd in upon us or of the value of the judgments we are forming. It would seem as though no event had ever destroyed so much of the precious heritage of mankind, confused so many of the clearest intellects or so thoroughly debased what is highest.
