Sinopse

Chartres Cathedral History explores the multifaceted story of Chartres Cathedral, a remarkable structure that embodies faith, art, and architectural innovation. This book examines the cathedral's evolution from pre-Christian sacred ground to a pivotal pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. It highlights how Chartres became a crucible of religious thought and artistic expression, influencing generations of artists and theologians.

Intriguingly, the decision to rebuild after the devastating fire of 1194 led to the embrace of the revolutionary Gothic style. The book delves into the interwoven historical, architectural, and spiritual dimensions of Chartres. It analyzes the political and economic forces, including the role of the French monarchy, that shaped its construction. Through detailed explorations of the stained glass, sculpture, and structural engineering, the book reveals the cathedral's symbolic meaning and technical achievements.

The book progresses chronologically, starting with the pre-Christian sites and concluding with an analysis of the cathedral's modern legacy.

History Of Egypt, Chaldæa, Syria, Babylonia, and Assyria is the masterwork of one of the fathers of modern egyptology. This work, in twelve volumes, was translated from the French original, “Histoire ancienne des peuples de l'Orient classique” by E. L. McClure and published in 1903-1904. Maspero was a largely self-taught master of hieroglyphic translation. In November 1880, he was placed at the head of a French archeological mission, which developed later into the Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale. Maspero then succeeded Mariette as director-general of excavations and of the antiquities of Egypt.“Aware that his reputation was then more as a linguist than an archaeologist, Maspero's first work in the post was to build on Mariette's achievements at Saqqara. He expanded their scope from the early Old Kingdom to the later, with particular interest in tombs with long and complete hieroglyphic inscriptions that could help illustrate the development of the Egyptian language. Selecting five later Old Kingdom tombs, he was successful in that aim, finding over 4000 lines of hieroglyphics which were then sketched and photographed.“As an aspect of his attempt to curtail the rampant illegal export of Egyptian antiquities by tourists, collectors and agents for the major European and American museums, Maspero arrested the Abd al-Russul brothers from the notorious treasure-hunting village of Gorna, who confessed under torture to having found the great cache of royal mummies at Deir el-Bahri in July 1881. The cache was moved to Cairo as soon as possible to keep it safe from robbers.“In 1886 he resumed work begun by Mariette to uncover the Sphinx, removing more than 65 feet of sand and seeking tombs below it (which he did not find, but have later been found but not opened).”Maspero went on to sponsor and expand the system of national museums and presided over the growing collection of the Bulak Museum. Maspero gave a 17 year old Howard Carter his first Egyptological job – and it was he who recommended Carter to Lord Carnarvon. Carter and Carnarvon would go on to doscover the tomb of King Tutankhaman. In the third volume of this master work, Maspero tackles ancient Chaldea, her gods and temples, and the civilization of Chaldea. John is the underrated love interest in the Little Women canon, but he is actually really great. He is a gentleman and a wonderful father and he adores Meg. I am joined by Little Women expert, the author of March Sisters Sweet Romance Book series, Jen Brady. In Jen's book "Falling for the tutor" we get John's point of view on things. What does he think about the March family and how did he fall in love with Meg? Join us in this wonderful discussion. We shall be discussing about Meg's character. Her original inspiration is Louisa May Alcott's older sister, Anna Alcott and how Meg is the one sister, who feels most pressure from the outside world to fit in. I have received questions about Louisa May Alcott's/Jo's anger issues, and the possibility of LMA being bipolar so I will be answering those questions as well.

Now in the pantheon of great thinkers, Simone Weil (1909–1943) lived largely in the shadows, searching for her spiritual home while bearing witness to the violence that devastated Europe twice in her brief lifetime. The letters she wrote to her parents and brother from childhood onward chart her intellectual range as well as her itinerancy and ever-shifting preoccupations, revealing the singular personality at the heart of her brilliant essays.

The first complete collection of Weil's missives to her family, A Life in Letters offers new insight into her personal relationships and experiences. The letters abound with vivid illustrations of a life marked by wisdom as much as seeking. The daughter of a bourgeois Parisian Jewish family, Weil was a troublemaking idealist who preferred the company of miners and Russian exiles to that of her peers. An extraordinary scholar of history and politics, she ultimately found a home in Christian mysticism.

A Life in Letters depicts Simone Weil's thought taking shape amid political turmoil, as she describes her participation in the Spanish struggle against fascism and in the transatlantic resistance to the Nazis. An introduction and notes by Robert Chenavier contextualize the letters historically and intellectually, relating Weil's letters to her general body of writing.
