  "In the Penal Colony" is a short story by Franz Kafka written in German in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. Internal clues and the setting on an island suggest Octave Mirbeau's The Torture Garden as an influence. The story is set in an unnamed penal colony and describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the commandment that the condemned prisoner has transgressed on his skin as he slowly dies over the course of twelve hours. As the plot unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the machine, including its origin and original justification.

The roots of the famine lay in the drastic changes to agriculture during the late 1920s and early 1930s, particularly the forced collectivization campaign, which aimed to reshape the entire agricultural sector to fit the needs of the Soviet state. This chapter explores the key policies that set the stage for the disaster that would unfold in the early 1930s. 
  The first step towards the famine was the rise of collectivization, a policy introduced by Stalin to consolidate individual farms into large, state-controlled collective farms. The goal was to increase agricultural productivity and provide the state with a surplus of grain to fuel industrialization. However, this policy met with widespread resistance from peasants who feared losing their land and livelihood. In response, the Soviet government resorted to violent measures to force peasants to join collective farms, including the execution or deportation of so-called "kulaks"—wealthier peasants—whom the regime labeled as class enemies. 
  Alongside collectivization, Stalin’s government implemented harsh grain procurement quotas. These quotas demanded that peasants surrender large portions of their harvest to the state at low prices, which were often below the cost of production. The policy was particularly detrimental to regions with fertile land, where the government set even higher quotas to maximize exports, often at the expense of local populations. The pressure to meet these quotas, combined with the challenges of collectivized farming, led to a dramatic reduction in food available for local consumption.

  Seamus Cashman comes from the village of Conna in County Cork. Educated att the local primary school, where his father was 'The Master', and at St. Colman's College, Fermoy, he also studied for the priesthood at Maynooth College but left after three years. 
  Having obtained a higher diploma in edication at University College, Cork, he spent two 'glorious' years in the mountains of southern Tanzania learning and teaching. He subsequently taught at St. Colman's, Fermoy before joining the newly established academic publishing house, Irish University Press in Dublin. When it closed seven years later, there was a period of unemployment before he set ip his own publishing house, Wolfhound Press. He lives in Portmarnock, County Dublin where he is married with three children. 
  The poems in this collection are new and old, and in essence are "attempts to delve into those personal and race memories that from time to time disturb our complacency, or that reflect some of the pleasure there is in remembering one's moments of wisdom amidst the decades of foolishness."
