Sinopsis

"Book Printing: From Sacred Texts to Modern Publishing" presents a fascinating journey through the evolution of written communication, focusing on how printing technology revolutionized religious discourse and literacy across civilizations.

At its core, the book explores the intricate relationship between technological innovation in printing and its profound impact on religious reformation, particularly through Bible production. From the early Chinese woodblock printing to Gutenberg's groundbreaking 42-line Bible, the narrative reveals how these advancements fundamentally transformed society's access to knowledge.

The book uniquely weaves together three critical themes:- the technical development of printing methods- the societal impact of mass-produced texts- the specific influence of Bible printing on language standardization

Through careful examination of archaeological findings, historical records, and printing archives, readers discover how Gutenberg's innovations in movable type and mechanical printing became the catalyst for standardized printing practices that would shape centuries of knowledge distribution. The interdisciplinary approach makes complex technical concepts accessible while maintaining scholarly depth.

Progressing through three major sections, the book first explores the technical evolution of printing technology, then examines the broader social impact of printed materials, and finally focuses on Bible printing's specific influence on language and religious reform. This comprehensive structure allows readers to understand both the mechanical innovations and their far-reaching cultural implications, making it valuable for scholars, printing enthusiasts, and students of medieval European history alike.

How the policies of elite colleges allow racially themed parties to continue by perpetuating the status quo. On a cold February evening, a group of students at Bowdoin College, an elite and historically white liberal arts college in Maine, gathered to drink tequila at a party referred to as “not not a fiesta.” By noon the next day, Instagram videos of students sporting miniature sombreros had spread like wildfire through campus. Over the next few weeks, national media outlets would broadcast the embarrassing fallout. But the frequency with which similar parties recur on campuses across the United States begs the question: what, if anything, do undergraduates learn about race and racism from these encounters?

Drawing on interviews and archival research, Yet Another Costume Party Debacle shows us how colleges both contest and reproduce racialized systems of power. Sociologist Ingrid A. Nelson juxtaposes how students and administrators discuss race with how they behave in the aftermath of racially charged campus controversies. Nelson spoke in-depth with students and other key players in several controversial parties—“Cracksgiving,” a “gangster party,” and the “not not a fiesta” tequila party—at Bowdoin. The college’s administrative response failed to encourage productive dialogue or address larger questions about race on campus. Nelson shows how the underlying campus structures at elite liberal arts colleges foster an environment that is ripe for racially charged incidents; we shouldn’t be surprised when we read about yet another costume party debacle. Nelson advises how we can take charge of diversity on our campuses by changing the systems that bring students together and drive them apart.

In Black Meme, Legacy Russell, author of Glitch Feminism, explores the construct, culture, and material of the "meme" as mapped to Black visual culture from 1900 to present day. These meditations include: the circulation of Lynching postcards; Jet magazine's publication of a picture of Emmett Till in his open casket; how the televised broadcast of protesters in Selma enters the nation's living room and changed the debate on civil rights; how a citizen-recorded video of the Rodney King beating at the hands of the LAPD became known as the "first viral video"; what the Anita Hill hearings tell us about the media's creation of the Black icon; Tamara Lanier's fight to reclaim the photos of her enslaved ancestors, Renty and Delia, from Harvard's archive; the Facebook Live recording by Lavish "Diamond" Reynolds of the murder of her partner Philando Castile by the police after being stopped for a broken tail light; and more.
