A New History of Slavery traces the institution of human bondage from antiquity to the present day, revealing how profoundly it has shaped global history and, above all, setting the record straight on how the horror of Atlantic slave trade was eliminated. 
  The story of slavery’s end has too often been told as a triumph of Christian morality or industrial progress. The factor that has often been almost completely erased from histories, is the role of the enslaved themselves. A New History of Slavery restores their agency. Through rebellion, sabotage, escape, and everyday acts of defiance, enslaved people relentlessly resisted their oppression. Across North America alone, more than 300 slave uprisings erupted, with many more in the Caribbean and roughly one in every tenth ship that sailed from Africa towards the America with a cargo of slaves. Every one of these thousands of rebellions was a declaration of humanity in the face of dehumanization. 
  A New History of Slavery forces everybody to ask, whether the 1801 and 1805 constitutions of St Domingue/Haiti were only footnotes of history, or whether they should be considered equal or even more important universal steps in humanity’s progress as the US constitution in 1776 and the French revolution in 1789. 
  Slavery is not a closed chapter of history. It is a deep, brutal wound whose scars still shape the world we live in. The issue has suddenly become more current and acute because even open and legalized slavery might make a comeback into the world via fundamentalist movements like Taliban and Boko Haram.

  The history of the tablets translated in the following pages is strange and beyond modern scientists' comprehension. Their age is astounding, dating back 36,000 years B.C. Thoth is an Atlantean Priest-King who established a colony in ancient Egypt after the mother country was sunk. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, which has been incorrectly attributed to Cheops. He included his knowledge of ancient wisdom as well as securely hidden records and instruments from ancient Atlantis. 
  From approximately 50,000 B.C. to 36.000 B.C., he ruled the ancient race of Egypt for approximately 16,000 years. The ancient barbarous race among which he and his followers had settled had advanced to a high level of civilization at the time. Thoth was immortal, that is, he had defeated death, passing only when he wished and not through death. His vast knowledge elevated him to the throne of the various Atlantean colonies, including those in South and Central America. 
  When the time came for him to leave Egypt, he built the Great Pyramid over the entrance to the Great Halls of Amenti, placed his records inside, and appointed guards from among the highest of his people to guard his secrets. The descendants of these guards later became the pyramid priests, through whom Thoth was deified as the God of Wisdom, The Recorder, by those living in the age of darkness that followed his death. The halls of Amenti were transformed into the underworld, the Halls of the Gods, where the soul passed after death for judgment. 
  The ego of Thoth passed into the bodies of men in later ages, as described in the tablets. As a result, he incarnated three times, the last time as Hermes, the thrice-born. In this incarnation, he left the Emerald Tablets, a later and far less complete exposition of the ancient mysteries.

  For nearly a thousand years following its foundation, there was only one Christian Church. Centered in the city of Rome, the Church expanded and grew until it became the dominant religion in Europe and beyond. The early growth of the Church had been suppressed by the Romans until the Emperor Constantine became the first to convert the empire to Christianity, and from that point forward, the growth of the Church was inextricably linked with the Roman Empire, the most powerful military, economic, and political force in the ancient world.

In retrospect, it is easy to see that this was a situation that was bound to lead to conflict and disagreement, with the Greek-speaking Eastern Orthodox Church centered in Constantinople and being governed by Latin-speaking popes in a faraway city. 
  To many, the pope is the embodiment of godly love in its purest form. No matter the weather or the inconvenience, millions upon millions of fervid devotees brave the congested streets of their cities, all for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to welcome the beloved Vicar of Christ. However, the modern perception of the pope is a far cry from how things were just a couple of centuries ago. There was a time when the holiest men of the world were constantly at each other's throats, willing to go to any lengths to secure the coveted papal title. By the late 14th century, tensions within the Church reached its breaking point, resulting in the Western Schism, an infamous split of the Catholic Church.
