Sinopsis

In "Write It Right: A Little Blacklist of Literary Faults," Ambrose Bierce delves into the intricacies of language and the common pitfalls that hinder effective communication. Written with his signature wit, Bierce presents a satirical yet instructional guide aimed at writers and scholars alike, addressing prevalent grammatical errors, stylistic inconsistencies, and linguistic pretensions. The book not only serves as a critique of literary pretension but also stands as a testament to Bierce's own mastery of language. Its concise, acerbic prose reflects the literary context of the late 19th century, an era when prose style was often equated with intellectual merit. Ambrose Bierce was a notable journalist, lexicographer, and satirist whose sharp observations of society resonate throughout his works. His experiences as a Civil War veteran and his subsequent disillusionment with the world around him deeply influenced his perspective on language and communication. Bierce's critical eye and relentless pursuit of clarity in writing propelled him to compose this work, which acts as both a guide and a cautionary tale against the misuse of language. "Write It Right" is an indispensable resource for aspiring writers, educators, and anyone who wishes to refine their command of the English language. Bierce's insights not only illuminate the importance of clarity in expression but also provoke readers to reconsider the very nature of literary artistry, making it an essential read for those passionate about the written word.

Before the Romans could become masters of the Mediterranean, they had to first conquer the people of their own peninsula. This book explores the origins of Roman imperialism and the creation of Rome's early Italian empire, bringing new light and interpretations to this important but problematic period in Roman history. It explains how and why the Romans were able to expand their influence within Italy, often through the use of armed conflict, laying the foundations for their great imperial project.

This book critically reexamines and reframes the traditional literary narrative within an archaeologically informed, archaic Italian context. Jeremy Armstrong presents a new interpretation of the early Roman army, highlighting the fluid and family-driven character which is increasingly visible in the evidence. Children of Mars argues that the emergence of Rome's empire in Italy should not be seen as the spread of a distinct "Roman" people across Italian land, but rather the expansion of a social, political, and military network amongst the Italian people. Armstrong suggests that Rome's early empire was a fundamentally human and relational one. While this reinterpretation of early Roman imperialism is no less violent than the traditional model, it alters its core dynamic and nature, and thus shifts the entire trajectory of Rome's Republican history.

For over thirty years, Opening the Hand of Thought has offered an introduction to Zen Buddhism and meditation unmatched in clarity and power. This is the revised edition of Kosho Uchiyama's singularly incisive classic.

This new edition contains even more useful material: new prefaces, an index, and extended endnotes, in addition to a revised glossary. As Jisho Warner writes in her preface, Opening the Hand of Thought "goes directly to the heart of Zen practice . . . showing how Zen Buddhism can be a deep and life-sustaining activity." She goes on to say, "Uchiyama looks at what a person is, what a self is, how to develop a true self not separate from all things, one that can settle in peace in the midst of life."

By turns humorous, philosophical, and personal, Opening the Hand of Thought is above all a great book for the Buddhist practitioner. It's a perfect follow-up for the listener who has heard Zen Meditation in Plain English and is especially useful for those who have not yet encountered a Zen teacher.
