Anton Chekhov, Guy de Maupassant, Kate Chopin. These three names thrill the literary world as well as our own. They have gravitas, they have knowledge, experience and they have the literary style and panache to seduce our imagined world.

Each has written a short story on pleasured lips placed on another’s flesh.

For Chekhov it was a kiss in a darkened room that happened by mistake. Who was she?

For Chopin it was a kiss that almost derailed a hoped-for marriage proposal. Why did he do that?

For de Maupassant it was a niece seeking advice from her Aunt on when to kiss and whom. And did she?

Add to this our own experiences of ‘the kiss’. A kiss to welcome a friend, the loving kiss for our child, our parents, the passionate kiss to a lover.

These experiences are individual to each of us but perhaps shape a thought or recall a memory when our three authors relate their own stories into our senses.

Eureka is Poe's attempt at explaining the universe, using his general proposition "Because Nothing was, therefore All Things are". In it, Poe discusses man's relationship to God and the universe or, as he offers at the beginning: "I design to speak of the Physical, Metaphysical and Mathematical—of the Material and Spiritual Universe: of its Essence, its Origin, its Creation, its Present Condition and its Destiny". In keeping with this design, Poe concludes "that space and duration are one" and that matter and spirit are made of the same essence.

This “beautifully written and soulful” story collection explores the lives and struggles of those on the fringes of California society (Mark Haskell Smith, author of Baked).

In Masha’allah and Other Stories, debut author Mariah K. Young brings readers deep into the unpredictable landscape of East Oakland, and the varied lives of remarkable individuals who rarely take center stage. In these nine tales, we take a ride with a hired driver who gets more than he bargains for with an unusual fare; we meet a day laborer whose search for work leads him to the edges of human sacrifice and hope; we join a plucky house cleaner named Chinta, who sets up impromptu beauty parlors in the houses she cleans.

Young’s fiction shines not only with literary power and warmth but with eye-opening freshness and honesty that cuts straight to the heart, reflecting our unflagging allegiances to love, family, luck, and hope.

At the request of a friend, the narrator travels to the Usher estate. Roderyk's letters suggest that he is suffering from a mysterious ailment and needs support. Upon arrival, it becomes clear that his sister is also falling into unexplained states. Day by day, the unsettling atmosphere of the house affects the narrator more and more.
