Sinopse

Transitioning from C can be daunting, with concerns about performance overhead, added complexity, and unfamiliar tooling. Addressing these challenges, Amar Mahmutbegovic, an advocate for modern C++ in embedded development, shows you how to harness zero-cost abstractions, compile-time checks, and powerful modern C++ capabilities to preserve performance while achieving safer, cleaner code. This book bridges the gap between traditional C and advanced C++, helping you retain the efficiency C developers demand while unlocking the safety and expressiveness of modern C++. Starting with a modern development environment setup, including a Docker container for seamless example replication, you’ll overcome the hurdles of using the C++ standard library in memory-constrained settings and get acquainted with the Embedded Template Library (ETL) as an alternative. The book walks you through essential C++ concepts before exploring advanced topics such as templates, strong typing, error handling, compile-time computation, and RAII. Through practical examples, you'll implement a sequencer, write a type-safe HAL, and apply patterns like Command, State, and Observer to solve common embedded development problems. By the end of this book, you’ll have learned how to apply modern C++ to develop robust, modular firmware with performance matching or exceeding hand-coded C solutions.

Medical imaging is a critical component of modern healthcare, providing a non-invasive means to visualize the internal structures of the body. From early radiographs (X-rays) to cutting-edge technologies like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), medical imaging has transformed the way doctors diagnose, treat, and monitor diseases. It allows clinicians to detect conditions that may otherwise remain hidden, aiding in early diagnosis and improving treatment outcomes.
The use of medical imaging dates back over a century, with Wilhelm Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays in 1895 being one of the most groundbreaking advancements in medical science. This discovery laid the foundation for a range of diagnostic techniques that have become indispensable in healthcare. Over the years, the field has evolved dramatically with the introduction of diverse imaging technologies, each offering unique advantages in specific clinical contexts.
Today, medical imaging includes a variety of techniques, such as X-ray, ultrasound, CT (Computed Tomography), MRI, PET, and more recently, advanced methods like 3D imaging and functional imaging. Each of these modalities provides detailed images of the body’s internal structures and functions, enabling physicians to identify and assess diseases ranging from fractures and infections to cancer and neurological disorders. For instance, X-ray is often used for skeletal imaging, while MRI is considered the gold standard for soft tissue imaging, especially in the brain and spinal cord.

The lymphatic system is one of the most crucial yet underappreciated systems in the human body. It plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance, supporting immune function, and facilitating the removal of waste and toxins. Unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart to pump blood, the lymphatic system relies on muscle movement and pressure changes within the body to circulate lymph fluid. This extensive network of vessels, nodes, and organs works silently in the background, keeping the body healthy and functioning efficiently.
At its core, the lymphatic system consists of lymph, a clear fluid that carries immune cells and waste products; lymph nodes, which filter harmful substances and house white blood cells; and an intricate system of vessels that transport lymph throughout the body. In addition, major lymphoid organs such as the spleen and thymus play essential roles in immune function and blood filtration. Despite its significance, the lymphatic system often goes unnoticed until problems arise, such as swelling, infections, or more serious conditions like lymphedema and lymphoma.
One of the primary functions of the lymphatic system is to maintain fluid balance. It collects excess fluid that leaks from blood vessels into tissues and returns it to the bloodstream. Without this process, the body would experience severe swelling and fluid retention, leading to tissue damage and impaired circulation. This drainage function is particularly important in preventing conditions like edema and ensuring that nutrients and oxygen reach the body's cells effectively.

This isn't a book filled with dry timelines or technical blueprints of the digital revolution. Instead, it's a firsthand journey—my journey—through one of the most astonishing transformations in human history: the rise of personal computing and the dawn of the digital age.
I was born in November 1955, at a time when the word “computer” was barely whispered outside of military labs and universities. My earliest memories include a bulky black-and-white television with rabbit-ear antennas, broadcasting a single channel. That flickering screen was my first encounter with electronic media—a far cry from the high-definition, touch-responsive world we live in now.
Over the decades, my path as an engineer and software developer placed me squarely in the midst of this technological upheaval. I didn’t just watch the future arrive—I helped build it, one line of code and one innovation at a time.
This book is a personal time capsule—a chronicle of what it was really like to live through the shift from analog to digital, from typewriters to tablets, from rotary phones to the infinite power in our pockets today. If you're a younger reader curious about how we got here, or someone who remembers the glow of vacuum tubes and the clack of punch cards, I invite you to walk with me through the decades.
You may be surprised by how far we’ve come—and how much we’ve forgotten along the way.
Many of the chapters are identified with the years or periods of time where these changes occurred.
