Sinopsis

In "The Age of Shakespeare," Algernon Charles Swinburne undertakes an extensive exploration of the Elizabethan theatrical landscape, emphasizing the transformative impact of William Shakespeare on both literature and the performing arts. Swinburne's literary style is characterized by its exuberant lyricism and rhythmic complexity, employing a blend of poetic analysis and theatrical critique. Set against the rich backdrop of the Renaissance, this work intricately examines how Shakespeare's innovative use of language, characterization, and thematic depth revolutionized dramatic expression, positioning him as a forerunner in the evolution of modern literature. Swinburne, a noted 19th-century poet and playwright, drew inspiration from Shakespeare's mastery and philosophical explorations. His own life as a literary figure involved a deep engagement with the intricacies of poetic form and dramatic structure, informed by a fascination with both classical and contemporary literature. His profound admiration for Shakespeare is evident in Swinburne's style, which mirrors the passion and complexity that define the Bard's works, making his analysis both personal and scholarly. This book is essential for scholars and aficionados of Shakespearean drama, offering engrossing insights that illuminate the profound layers of meaning within the texts. Swinburne's passionate and articulate advocacy for Shakespeare not only enriches the reader's understanding, but also invites a renewed appreciation for the timeless relevance of the Bard's works in today's literary discourse.

Perhaps you have heard of the horrible stories of the Spanish, Portuguese, or French inquisition, the Catholic body of persecutors who would arrest the supposed “heathens” and accuse them of witchcraft, heresies, blasphemy, adultery, and a whole list of other sins or crimes. Torture, interrogations, executions, burnings, and other inhumane methods were used to then force, coerce, or kill the victims of this Catholic organization within the church at the time.
We are talking mostly about medieval times, when the power of the Catholic church extended throughout Europe. The Inquisition, typically called the "Holy Inquisition" in middle ages clerical terms, was a series of organizations within the Catholic Church whose objective was to fight heresy. Research studies of the archives have exposed that the large bulk of sentences were penances, but that cases of repeat unrepentant apostates were given nonreligious courts, where they were normally executed or sentenced to life. The Inquisition was established in 12th-century France to fight spiritual variance (such as apostasy or heresy), particularly amongst the Cathars and Waldensians. The Middle ages Inquisition describes the inquisitorial courts that existed from this time till the mid-15th century.
Discover the pain, the frustration, the hypocrisy, and the drama behind the inquisition. Learn more about their motives, their methods, their superiors, and their murdering.

This is a Pariyatti audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 157, "The Bodhisattva Concept" by A.G.S. Kariyawasam found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. V.

    Excerpt from The Bodhisattva Concept:

In original Pali Buddhism, the term bodhisatta is used more or less exclusively to designate Gautama Buddha prior to his enlightenment.

'The concept of bodhisattva, along with that of Buddha and of the cakravartin (world-ruler), was in vogue in India even before the appearance of Gautama Buddha. When Prince Siddhārtha, who later became Gautama Buddha, took conception in the womb of Queen Māyā, a seer predicted that Suddhodana’s future son would be either a world-ruler (cakravartin) or a Buddha. Once, answering a question by a brahmin, the Buddha himself admitted that he is neither a god nor a yakkha, but a Buddha, meaning thereby one of a succession of Buddhas (A II 38).
