Sinopsis

In "Songs of Two Nations," Algernon Charles Swinburne constructs a poignant poetic narrative that explores the themes of national identity and the complexities of imperialism within the socio-political context of the late 19th century. Through rich imagery and a lyrical style that seamlessly weaves together passion and melancholy, Swinburne delves into the contrasting ideals of England and the nascent American Republic. His work resonates with the Romantic tradition while simultaneously embracing the burgeoning modernist sensibilities, offering a multi-layered perspective on the interplay between liberty and oppression in a rapidly changing world. Swinburne, an enigmatic figure in Victorian literature, was deeply influenced by the turbulent politics of his time, including movements for social reform and the evolving relationship between Britain and its colonies. As a staunch advocate for artistic and personal freedom, Swinburne's defiance of conventional literary norms and candid engagement with controversial topics stem from his dedication to both art and justice, making him a voice of his generation. His dialogues with prominent thinkers, as well as his own experiences, undoubtedly shaped the themes he tackles in this collection. Readers seeking an insightful exploration of the juxtaposition of nations, alongside a captivating use of language, will find "Songs of Two Nations" indispensable. Swinburne's ability to synthesize emotion and intellect creates an enriching experience, inviting readers to reflect on the nature of liberty and the cultural tensions that still resonate today.

Sophie is about to become a single mum – a third-generation one – and she's terrified. How will she afford to feed her baby? Or a Deluxe Snuggle Pod? Can she hold on to her job? What if she's crap at parenthood? Surely she can count on her own mum and nan to help...
Except her mum's got used to having a life of her own, and doesn't fancy giving up pole-dancing class and Tinder to go back to changing nappies and no sleep. Meanwhile, fresh out of hospital with a broken leg, her nan's having a three-quarter-life crisis of her own.
From slammed doors to living-room karaoke, Lydia Marchant's play Mumsy is a sparky, soulful comedy drama about the highs and lows of motherhood. It premiered at Hull Truck Theatre in March 2023.

This is a solo recording of the play, meaning that all parts including stage directions are performed by one person, me, who incidentally enjoyed doing it immensely. Little needs to be said about the play itself, a sparkling example of Wilde's amazing ability to poke fun at almost everyone while making you laugh out loud at the witty sayings sprinkled throughout the acts. As to the plot, if you don't know it already, let me just say that it involves two young English men who fall madly and instantly in love with two young English women who of course love them back mainly because their name is Earnest. Unfortunately, that is not their names and there are many bumps and crashes on the road to the happy wedding bells. Listen and enjoy !

'I wanted to put you bang in the picture. Apprise you of the difficulties. Because, in case you hadn't noticed, he's a human fucking boobytrap. And now, guess what, surprise surprise, boom!'
A world-famous children's author under threat. A battle of wills in the wake of scandal. And a chance to make amends…
It's the summer of 1983, The Witches is about to hit the shelves and Roald Dahl is making last-minute edits. But the outcry at his recent, explicitly antisemitic article won't die down. Across a single afternoon at his family home, and rocked by an unexpectedly explosive confrontation, Dahl is forced to choose: make a public apology or risk his name and reputation.
Inspired by real events, Mark Rosenblatt's debut play Giant offers a nuanced portrait of a fiendishly charismatic icon – and explores with dark humour the difference between considered opinion and dangerous rhetoric.
The play was first performed to great acclaim at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2024, directed by Nicholas Hytner with a cast including John Lithgow as Dahl. It transferred to the West End the following year, and won the Olivier and Critics' Circle Awards for Best New Play. Mark Rosenblatt won Best Creative West End Debut at the Stage Debut Awards in 2025.
