Written by one of Russia’s literary masters, Smoke is both a poignant love story and a brilliant socio-political study. Marked with a barbed wit and a visionary modernism, it became the center of a famous philosophical breach between Turgenev and Dostoevsky.
On the brink of marriage, Grigorii Litvinov visits the fashionable European spa of Baden-Baden, a scene dominated by the Russian upper classes. Among them is the beautiful Irina Osinin, Litvinov’s first love, to whom he was engaged ten years earlier. Litvinov’s struggle with a nostalgic passion is set against the background of a society pulled both toward and against change as it feels the influence of the West.
A sensitive and intelligent commentary on human nature, Turgenev’s Smoke endures for its high aesthetic standards and its universal qualities of understanding.

Rudyard Kipling’s The Phantom Rickshaw and Other Ghost Stories conjures colonial India’s spectral shadows to expose human vice and imperial hubris. In the titular tale, John Holderness, a British officer, is tormented by the vengeful ghost of Bessie Slane—a woman he abandoned—manifesting as an unstoppable phantom rickshaw, symbolizing guilt and moral rot. Stories like The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Noul trap characters in surreal horrors, while My Own True Ghost Story blends dark humor with existential dread. The Man Who Would Be King critiques imperial ambition through two adventurers’ doomed quest for power. Kipling’s evocative prose merges Gothic terror with sharp social critique, using the supernatural to mirror colonial fragility and the inescapable echoes of sin. This anthology hauntingly reveals how personal and imperial pasts linger as spectral judges of human folly.

'The past is to cherish; the future is to relish.'

Initially serialised in Bentley's Miscellany, a literary journal edited by Dickens at the time, The Mudfog Papers is a compelling early illustration of Dickens's satirical style and great wit.

First published in the 1830s, The Mudfog Papers is a humorous collection of stories and sketches set in the fictional town of Mudfog. A gentle mockery of some of the intellectual societies at the time – particularly the British Association for the Advancement of Science – the narratives in this anthology revolve around the Mudfog Society for the Advancement of Everything, characterised through its eccentric (and sometimes foolish) members, pseudo-scientific theories and bizarre inventions. In many ways, The Mudfog Papers is a delightful continuation of The Pickwick Papers, and again cements Dickens's status as a master of satire. This audiobook edition is skilfully read by David Timson.
Charles Dickens (1812 – 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and, by the twentieth century, critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are widely read, performed and adapted today.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Anne, a young orphan from Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia is sent to Prince Edward Island. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, siblings in their 50s and 60s, had decided to adopt a boy from the orphanage to help Matthew run their farm. They live at Green Gables, their farmhouse in Avonlea. Through a misunderstanding, the orphanage sends Anne Shirley.
Anne is described as bright and quick, eager to please, talkative and imaginative. She has a pale face with freckles and usually braids her red hair. When asked her name, Anne tells Marilla to call her Cordelia, which Marilla refuses; Anne then insists that if she is to be called Anne, it must be spelled with an 'e', as that spelling is "so much more distinguished".
Marilla at first says the girl must return to the orphanage, but after a few days, she decides to let her stay. Marilla feels that she could be a good influence on the girl and also overheard that another disagreeable woman in town might take Anne instead.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.
