Sinopsis

In "Sir Thomas Browne and his 'Religio Medici': An Appreciation," Alexander Whyte offers a profound exploration of Browne's seminal work, which uniquely intertwines philosophy, religion, and science. The literary style is characterized by its rich, meditative prose that reflects Browne's intellectual curiosity and spiritual depth. Whyte analyzes the historical and cultural contexts of the 17th century, highlighting how Browne's reflections on faith and existence resonate with the tumultuous intellectual climate of his time, especially in the wake of the Renaissance and Reformation, where inquiry into the human condition was paramount. Whyte, a distinguished Scottish theologian and author, drew on his extensive knowledge of religious literature to produce this appreciation of Browne. His own background in the intricacies of faith and philosophy deeply informs his analysis, as he seeks not just to evaluate Browne's work, but to uncover the rich implications of its themes. Whyte's nuanced understanding of the relationship between science and spirituality sheds light on Browne's humanistic perspective in an era defined by conflict and uncertainty. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the intersection of literature and spirituality, providing remarkable insights into Browne's timeless inquiry into the nature of belief and existence. Whyte's eloquence and depth make this work a compelling addition to the scholarship surrounding Browne, rendering it a valuable text for both literary enthusiasts and theological scholars.

On his deathbed, some historians claim that when he was pressed to name a successor, Alexander the Great muttered that his empire should go “to the strongest”. Other sources claim that he passed his signet ring to his general Perdiccas, thereby naming him successor, but whatever his choices were or may have been, they were ignored. Alexander’s generals, all of them with the loyalty of their own corps at their backs, would tear each other apart in a vicious internal struggle that lasted almost half a century before four factions emerged victorious: Macedonia, the Seleucid Empire in the east, the Kingdom of Pergamon in Asia Minor, and the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt. During the course of these wars, Alexander’s only heir, the posthumously born Alexander IV, was murdered, extinguishing his bloodline for ever.
For a time, the Seleucids commanded the largest empire in the world as it stretched from the high plains and deserts of what is now Afghanistan in the east to parts of the Levant and Asia Minor in the west. The empire’s early kings were strong and shrewd and committed to the ideas of Hellenism as much as holding power and expanding the realm of their empire, but later rulers did not prove as capable. In time, the Seleucid royal house often descended into orgies of violence which were driven by ambitious men and women.
Although Alexander never lived to rule over Egypt, one of his generals, Ptolemy I, did, and it was he who established the last great pharaonic dynasty in Egypt, known as the Ptolemaic Dynasty. Despite the infighting among them, one thing Alexander’s generals did agree upon was their Hellenistic culture. Most famously, Ptolemy’s line firmly established the Hellenistic culture of the Greeks while ruling over Egypt, and by marrying within their family line, the Ptolemaic pharaohs kept their Hellenistic heritage until the very end of Ptolemy’s line, which died with Cleopatra in 30 BC.

Finding meaning in trauma work, as a traumatized healer yourself.

The act of caregiving is physically exhausting and emotionally draining, yet caregivers describe it as rewarding and gratifying. Prolonged exposure to human suffering, however, is not without risks—caregivers report high rates of burnout and poor quality of life.

Many care providers believe that their feelings do not matter; that they should ignore their pain, brush off their trauma, wipe away their tears, and just "suck it up." Here, Omar Reda—a Libyan-born American psychiatrist who as an emergency physician and trauma counselor provided care for medical staff caring for victims of trauma—calls upon other healers to break free from cycles of secrecy, toxic stress, and silent suffering so they can continue to empower and inspire those in their care.

Filled with poignant first-person stories and clinical case studies, this book is an impassioned plea for psychosocial trauma care that prioritizes the health of both client and healer.

What does it mean to be white? Beyond just a skin colour, is it also a way of thinking? If so, how did it come about, and why?

In this book, drawing on history, personal experience and activist literature, the former footballer and World Champion Lilian Thuram looks at the origins and workings of white thinking, how it divides us and how it has become ubiquitous and accepted without challenge. He demonstrates how centuries of white bias and denial justified slavery and colonialism, and have reinforced norms and structures of oppression, limiting the roles and horizons of both non-whites and whites alike.
Crucially, while White Thinking is a critique of ingrained structural inequities, it calls for an inclusive approach to solving the problem, and aims to raise awareness and imagine a new world in which all of humanity is given equal weight.
“White Thinking patiently demonstrates… how European societies, through their creation of Black people, also invented White people.” LE MONDE
“Strikes another blow in his battle against racial stereotypes.” LA VIE
“This book is not interested in repentance or white guilt but in the ability to face up to historical reality and to the fact that others might have a very different understanding of that history.” REVUE DES DEUX MONDES
“He is almost unique amongst retired sportspeople, having left his old life behind him in the dressing room. Today, the activist has replaced the footballer.” LIBÉRATION
