The Two Barques is a short story by Arthur Conan Doyle first published in the Pearson's Magazine in march 1897. 2nd story of the Captain Sharkey saga.In Kingston, an elderly logwood-cutter saw Captain Sharkey's pirate barque, the Happy Delivery, careening at Torbec on the south-west of Hispaniola, as well as Sharkey himself, with four men, buccaneering on the outlying island of La Vache. Stephen Craddock, an adventurer comes to the Governor Sir Edward Compton with a plan for the extirpation of Sharkey. He want to use the sister ship of the Happy Delivery, the White Rose, and set sail for the Island of La Vache, where Sharkey is slaying the wild oxen. When Sharkey will see the White Rose he will surely mistake it for his own vessel which he is awaiting, and he will come on board to his own undoing. The plan is accepted by the Governor and Craddock set sail to La Vache with a crew of volunteers. When they arrive to La Vache, no sign of Sharkey. They search him in the forest for a few days but finally they decide to return to their boat. When they arrive on board something is strange, as if it was not the same ship, and suddenly they are captured by Sharkey on the deck. They are on the pirate ship the Happy Delivery which came back from its careening upon the very day that they left in the forest. Then the White Rose is scuttled in the bay. Craddock, bruised and wounded in soul and body, is thrown into a dark sail-room. For two days, the Happy Delivery set sail to Jamaica. When he arrives to Port-Royal, Sharkey, with that diabolical cunning and audacity which were among his main characteristics, is simulating the part which Craddock would himself have played had he come back victorious. Sharkey exhibits Craddock on the deck so that the other side could fall into the trap but the later has sprung the bulwarks and is swimming for his life. He is hit and hit again by pistol shots but is still swimming. Irritated, Sharkey takes his musket and fired a fatal blow on Craddock.Show book
Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. The Red Badge of CourageThe Red Badge of Courage was Stephen Crane's best known novel. It was one of his two great ones, the other being the under rated, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which was also a ground breaking novel taking up the subject of women's plights in industrial society as the Red Badge takes up men's plight in wartime.The story is a cerebral one, about what the protagonist, new recruit 18 year old Yankee Henry Fleming, thinks. As in most Crane writing, most characters remain nameless such as the Tall Soldier. The story starts with all the enthusiasm of newbies going to war. Then Fleming faces the boredom of military camp and, as a writer famously said, 99% of the time boredom, 1% terror. Crane introduces us to that subject through this novel. In the first battle Henry runs; but he is covered by the confusion and gets to return and reunite with his fellows. He picks up a fake injury to justify this by being bonked on the head by another retreating soldier. In the last section, Fleming steps up as the flag carrier, fights well, and survives for another day. Another later Crane short story, The Veteran, features Fleming as an older man, so presumably he survived the Civil War. This is all left open ended as the novel only covers a few weeks time in the four year war. Listen to The Veteran to see how it all turned out and was remembered.Show book
This story coincides with April 30, or May Day’s Eve, when it was held that witches met on the Brocken mountain and kept communion with the Devil. It is named after St. Walburga, and English nun who helped convert Germans to Christianity in the 8th century. Her feast day coincides with an ancient pagan festival, whose rites were intended to give protection against witchcraft. Stoker originally wrote this story to be included in his novel, Dracula, but the editor struck it from the original work. Dracula’s Guest was published posthumously, being the title of a collection of short stories of similar gothic horror.Show book
