  The Roman Empire is coming apart at the seams, relying on German recruits and foederati to hold the empire together. Yul the elder’s job is to make certain that the mostly German troopers of the Saxon Shore are fed, equipped, and paid, but Romano-British landlords are withholding taxes while enslaving Germans and building lavish country houses. Life in the monastic school at Verulamium (Saint Albans) proves difficult for Yul the Younger with monks insisting he give up his Germanic gods for Christ. He is also harassed by the entitled sons of British elites. Yul dares to make his escape with his best friend, a Pict, named Keaffer. Both enlist in the Brave Companions stationed at Othona as self-declared Emperor Flavius Claudius Constantine opts to invade Gaul to capture the purple and stop the Germanic tribes from crossing the Rhine Frontier to settle in the dying empire. Tall, blond, and broad, Yul joins the invasion of Europa. He also finds love and seeks revenge for the wrongs committed by Britons against his family and companions.

  Between 1958 and 1976, the Irish American writer Mary Lavin had sixteen stories published in The New Yorker, after J. D. Salinger introduced her to the magazine. It was a prolific time for Lavin, helped in no small part by her close working relationship with her chief editor there, Rachel MacKenzie. They wrote nearly four-hundred letters to each other, the topics of which ranged from story edits to holiday plans, windfalls and legal troubles, mutual literary friends and their love of gardening, promotions and health emergencies. Within a year of working together, they were ending their letters with 'love', 'gratefully' and 'affectionately'. Lavin was soon offered the magazine's highly coveted first-reading agreement.

It includes the famous line “I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart of a king, and of a king of England, too”.John Milton, Satan’s First Speech, Paradise Lost, 1667. We end the volume with a speech against faith and monarchy, which gives us the phrase “Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav'n.” Paradise Lost explores the limits of both divinity and monarchy, and marks the end of an age where the two combined to rule the world.
