In the ruins of a garden in rural England, in a house which was once a home, one woman searches for seeds of hope.
Mike Bartlett's play Albion was premiered in October 2017 at the Almeida Theatre, London, in a production directed by Rupert Goold.
'Something remarkable. Our country needs it' - Telegraph
'[Has] a deeply reflective and humane quality to it: Bartlett draws his confused characters with a Chekhovian mix of wit and compassion… explores national identity through private mourning, and the meaning of the garden shifts, grows and deepens with the seasons' - Financial Times
'Scintillating… in the sometimes abrasive but always compelling Audrey, Bartlett has written a richly imagined female lead who can be mentioned in the same breath as the self-dramatizing Arkadina in The Seagull' - New York Times
'A work of deeply absorbing emotional richness and symphonic density' - Independent
'Fascinating, complex… what makes the play so enormously intriguing is that, as in his King Charles III, Bartlett shows us as a deeply divided people torn between the urge to preserve the past and to radically reform it' - Guardian

The author of Fear of Flying “touches on her mother’s death, astrophysics and her own return to poetry, which ‘came / unbidden / as it / always / does’” (The New York Times).   Life challenges us to celebrate even when our very existence is threatened. Never have we needed poetry more.   Poetry was #1 New York Times–bestselling novelist Erica Jong’s first love, and she never left it. In a dark time, she celebrates life—the title of this collection, The World Began with Yes, comes from the celebrated Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, who was deeply in love with life despite many tragedies.   Jong believes that the poet sees the world in a grain of sand and eternity in a wild flower—as Blake wrote. Her work has always stressed the importance of the lives of women, women’s creativity, and self-confidence, and this collection is an inspiration to readers, as well as the next generation of poets.   “Say ‘yes,’ to this collection and let the world begin.” —Kim Dower, author of Sunbathing on Tyrone Power’s Grave

LibriVox volunteers bring you 16 readings of Romance by Andrew Lang, probably best known as Edward Elgar's song My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land. Interestingly, Lang initially refused permission for his words to be used as lyrics, and Elgar's wife Alice wrote alternative words Afar, amidst the Sunny Isles for the song. However, Lang later relented and gave permission for his poem to be used.
The poem was initially published in The Century Magazine, May 1882, and this is the version recorded here. Later collections of Lang's poetry omit the third verse. (Summary by Ruth Golding)
