Facts are few, stories many. He seems to have been known by different names in many parts of India, appearing and disappearing through the years. His non-Indian devotees of recent years knew him as Neem Karoli Baba, but mostly as “Maharajji” – a nickname so commonplace in India that one can often hear a tea vendor addressed thus. Just as he said, he was "nobody". He gave no discourses; the briefest, simplest stories were his teachings. Usually, he sat or lay on a wooden bench wrapped in a plaid blanket while a few devotees sat around him. Visitors came and went; they were given food, a few words, a nod, a pat on the head or back, and they were sent away. There was gossip and laughter for he loved to joke. Orders for running the ashram were given, usually in a piercing yell across the compound. Sometimes he sat in silence, absorbed in another world to which we could not follow, but bliss and peace poured down on us. Who he was was no more than the experience of him.   “First steps of tomb found,” British archaeologist Howard Carter excitedly wrote across a page of his pocket diary on November 4, 1922. The next day’s excavation in the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile River would reveal a tantalizing entrance. He quickly sent a telegram to Lord Carnarvon, who had been sponsoring his (mostly unsuccessful) investigations of Egyptian antiquities for several years and had reluctantly backed this final season: “At last have made wonderful discovery in Valley; a magnificent tomb with seals intact.” 
   
  The subsequent opening of Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s long untouched tomb and its burial chamber—and the dissemination of its treasures through photography, film, and traveling exhibitions—would captivate the world and transform a young Egyptian king whose reign was brief and little remembered into an icon of ancient mysteries. 
   
  Because Tutankhamun’s tomb was largely undisturbed—there are indications it was robbed a couple of times in antiquity but then restored—it offered a rare view into ancient Egypt and its faith, culture, and funerary rites. Stories about its discovery and the gradual uncovering of its artifacts made front-page news across the globe, with reporters marveling at each opulently adorned statue and alabaster vase. On December 22, 1922, The New York Times published a first-hand account in which the author wrote: “No finer human interest story, no more thrilling drama, no greater archaeological revelations could be summoned from history or the most vivid imagination than is told by the mute objects in this tomb of King Tutankhamen.” 
   
  Howard Carter was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the intact tomb of the 18th Dynasty Pharaoh Tutankhamun in November 1922, the best-preserved pharaonic tomb ever found in the Valley of the Kings. This is his story!

  After an introduction establishing Cromwell's war against the Scots from July 1650 to May 1652, this book discusses Charles' landing and Fairfax's resignation as commander-in-chief of the English Republican Army, both events occurred on the same day. It then addresses the causes of the war, Charles II's landing in Northern Scotland from the Continent. The story continues chronologically, from Cromwell's invasion of Scotland, through the Battle of Dunbar, and the slow establishment of the king's power over the Scottish government. The end came with the fall of the last of the Scottish castles, Dunnottar, to English conquest. The Scots enjoyed a distinct military recovery after the Dunbar defeat, but their aims and those of the king were always at cross purposes: the king was intent on the invasion of England, the Scots on resistance to English conquest. Finally, Cromwell's manoeuvres in the summer of 1651, and the English victory at Inverkeithing, allowed the king to invade England. This ended in another Scots defeat at Worcester. The removal of the Scots Army to England meanwhile allowed the English under Monck to complete their conquest of Scotland. Throughout, the political dimension, particularly in Scotland, is kept in view. At the end, the author comments on the relevance of these events to the present Scottish situation.
