Moving to the sleepy town of Havens Hallow, Massachusetts, during my senior year hadn't been part of my future plans. Not to mention the ancient house my father bought sits next to the creepiest place imaginable—a graveyard full of battered stone statues. It's a far cry from the upper-middle class neighborhood we left behind.

That wasn't the only thing I had to walk away from. My position as the star quarterback of my old team has now been replaced with a not-so-cozy spot on the sideline. With a football scholarship on the line, I can't afford to be benched. But my grades are in the trash and my mood is buried somewhere beneath the soil of my new personal nightmare.

I need help, and fast. August Sanders, a classmate in my new school, volunteers to tutor me. As much as my bruised ego hates it, I can't turn down the offer.

However, he forgot to mention a pretty important detail that sends shivers through every cell in my body.

August isn't a student. Not anymore. He's not even made of flesh and bone. And apparently I'm the only person who's been able to see him in more than three years.

There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.

"Once, the Kranzedan wanted to take the underground. There, at the end of the escalator, which took him deep, deep down into the earth, and easily missed between fadedbillboards, was a small iron door. Behind it the Kranzedan heard a tiny voice calling tohim: »Come in, come in, come in …«He opened the door, and squeezed through, and he has not been seen since …"33 bizarre stories in which the author makes his main character disappear again andagain as if by a magic trick, only for him to reappear unexpectedly in the next story. Partlychildishly perfidious, partly unrestrainedly evil, the short stories drag us into thepicturesque madness of the horror paintings created by Michael Hutter.
