Sinopsis

The international system is going through a phase of heightened disorder. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, and the Israel-Hamas conflict in late 2023 have shown that the current crisis of the international order is being increasingly militarized. Facing wars and instability closer to home, and a rise in big-power competition, Europe is feeling less and less "secure".
This year's ISPI Report unpacks the different dimensions of the current "Age of Insecurity", looking into its political, economic, and demographic facets. It shows how different actors in the international system tackle such insecurity (while also contributing to create more), with a focus on the United States, China, Russia, India and the "Global South", and the main protagonists of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
It finally zooms in on Europe, looking for viable options that could help the continent better face these rising political, economic, and demographic insecurities.

Rachel Meller was never close to her aunt Lisbeth, a cool, unemotional woman with a drawling Viennese-Californian accent, a cigarette in her hand. But when Lisbeth died, she left Rachel an intricately carved Chinese box with a sunflower clasp. Inside the box were photographs, letters and documents that led Rachel to uncover a story she had never known: that of a passionate Jewish teenager growing up in elegant Vienna, who was caught up by war, and forced to flee to Shanghai.

Far from home, in a strange city, Lisbeth and her parents build a new life - a life of small joys and great hardship, surrounded by many others who, like them, have fled Hitler and the Nazis. 1930s Shanghai is a metropolis where the old rules do not apply - a city of fabulous wealth and crushing poverty, where disease is rife, and gangsters rub shoulders with rich emigrés; where summer brings unspeakable heat, and winter is bitterly cold; and where European refugees build community and, maybe, a young woman can find love.

Set against a backdrop of the war in the Far East, The Box with the Sunflower Clasp is a sweeping family memoir that tells the hidden history of the Jews of Shanghai. Rachel Meller writes with elegance and insight as she examines what it means to survive, and what the legacy of displacement and war might mean for the generation that comes afterwards.

"The Art of War" is a timeless and influential treatise on strategy and warfare attributed to Sun Tzu, a renowned Chinese military strategist, philosopher, and tactician of ancient China. Written over 2,500 years ago, this classic work has transcended its original purpose as a military manual to become a foundational text on strategic thinking applicable to various aspects of life, including business, leadership, and conflict resolution.
Divided into thirteen chapters, "The Art of War" delves into the intricate complexities of warfare and the principles that govern success on the battlefield. Sun Tzu emphasizes the importance of flexibility, adaptability, and understanding the terrain in order to gain an advantage over one's adversaries. The book discusses various strategies, including the direct and indirect approaches, the utilization of deception, the management of resources, and the significance of timing in achieving victory.
One of the central concepts in the book is the idea that the ultimate triumph lies in winning without engaging in actual combat. Sun Tzu stresses the value of outsmarting opponents through strategic maneuvering and psychological warfare, reducing the need for bloody confrontation. He underlines the importance of understanding both one's own strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of the opposition, in order to make informed decisions that lead to success.
"The Art of War" also touches upon leadership qualities and the need for effective communication and discipline within an organization. Sun Tzu's insights have been applied not only to military strategies but also to various fields, such as business management, negotiation, and personal development. His teachings highlight the significance of preparation, planning, and adaptability in achieving one's goals.
