Beschreibung

From Glasgow Without Love is an evocative collection of ten compelling stories that encapsulate the intricate tapestry of human experience, inspired by a cold shivering night the author slept at the Buchanan bus station, Glasgow. This work explores themes of love, immigration, and identity through the lens of diverse characters navigating their realities. From the heart-wrenching journey of a black immigrant facing deportation in the titular story to the tragic aftermath of a queer one-night stand in ‘One Gay Night’, each narrative delves deeply into the struggles and triumphs of its protagonists. Set between Nigeria and Glasgow, the characters in the collection reveal the chaotic vibrancy of modern life by bringing a vivid context to these poignant tales. Interweaving humour and heartache, this collection masterfully captures the essence of resilience and the universal quest for connection, ultimately illuminating the beauty and complexity of the human spirit.

Together, they navigated through ocean currents to rescue struggling sea turtles during a storm, embodying Jemma's reputation as the gentle guardian of the sea. When a young seahorse named Soren lost his home in the storm, Jemma offered him refuge and friendship, proving once again her compassion and resilience.

Have you ever made a split-second decision that changed the course of your life? When, at one fell swoop, your world glided from one side of a thin veil that was happiness, to the other? Nineteen-year-old honey-eyed Perpetua (Pippa), a tragic, heartbreakingly beautiful Luso-Indian had to do just that and it takes her almost four decades to discover that she was not the decisionmaker after all - someone centuries ago made that decision for her. Can she reach across space and time and rent that veil? Is it too late? Can she ever be happy? Fulfilled?
They Whisper in my Blood is a moving love story, a sweeping tale, a panorama of a Portuguese-Indian family's history told through a poignant refrain that is this clan's nemesis. It screams across time and continents. There's murder, girl-child trafficking, a torrid mixed-race affair and homophobia, all of which beget intrigue, sensuousness, heartache . . . but always hope. The characters - visceral, impassioned and deeply flawed - stay with you long after the last page is turned.
Fans of authors like Arundhati Roy, Delia Owens and Richard Powers will love this multi-generational story. Nature's spontaneous beauty is reverenced in sentences that weave lush imagery, so evocative, one can almost smell the spice. Sculpted with as bold a hand, is the plot which delivers one hell of a punch. Combining the literary pizzaz of A passage to India, the cultural nuances of characters that abound in novels like The Glass Palace, the poignancy of The Bridges of Madison County, the wondrously inspirational, life-affirming plot of A Long Way Home, They Whisper in My Blood captures the deep essence of the struggles endured by those of us who are mangled by tradition, prejudices, superstitions and snobbery.

Alfred McLelland Burrage was born in Hillingdon, Middlesex on 1st July, 1889. His father and uncle were both writers, primarily of boy’s fiction, and by age 16 AM Burrage had joined them. The young man had ambitions to write for the adult market too. The money was better and so was his writing.
From 1890 to 1914, prior to the mainstream appeal of cinema and radio the printed word, mainly in magazines, was the foremost mass entertainment. AM Burrage quickly became a master of the market publishing his stories regularly across a number of publications. <p.By the start of the Great War Burrage was well established but in 1916 he was conscripted to fight on the Western Front. He continued to write during these years documenting his experiences in the classic book War is War by Ex-Private X.
For the remainder of his life Burrage was rarely printed in book form but continued to write and be published on a prodigious scale in magazines and newspapers.
