Beschreibung

From Glasgow Without Love is an evocative collection of ten compelling stories that encapsulate the intricate tapestry of human experience, inspired by a cold shivering night the author slept at the Buchanan bus station, Glasgow. This work explores themes of love, immigration, and identity through the lens of diverse characters navigating their realities. From the heart-wrenching journey of a black immigrant facing deportation in the titular story to the tragic aftermath of a queer one-night stand in ‘One Gay Night’, each narrative delves deeply into the struggles and triumphs of its protagonists. Set between Nigeria and Glasgow, the characters in the collection reveal the chaotic vibrancy of modern life by bringing a vivid context to these poignant tales. Interweaving humour and heartache, this collection masterfully captures the essence of resilience and the universal quest for connection, ultimately illuminating the beauty and complexity of the human spirit.

Bulfinch (July 15, 1796 - May 27, 1867) explains the his work is "an attempt tell the stories of mythology in such a manner as to make them a source of amusement. We have endeavored to tell them correctly, according to the ancient authorities, so that when the reader finds them referred to he may not be at a loss to recognize the reference. Thus we hope to teach mythology not as a study, but as a relaxation from study; to give our work the charm of a story-book, yet by means of it to impart a knowledge of an important branch of education."The Bulfinch version of myth presents the myths in their literary versions, without unnecessary violence, sex, psychology or ethnographic information. The Bulfinch myths are an indispensable guide to the cultural values of the American 19th century. (Summary from Wikipedia)This is the third of Bulfinch's series of three mythologies. TODAY WAS FINALLY THE DAY.
I bounded out of bed and checked the calendar hanging above my desk just to be sure, grinning when I saw the circled date. It was September 1st, and that meant I was finally old enough to apply for my dungeon diving license.
The excitement gripped me as I brushed my teeth, dripping toothpaste all over the sink as I stared back at myself in the mirror. Today wasn’t my birthday—that had happened a couple months back.
The first day of September was important because on this date every year, Dungeon Divers United, a special guild that monitored and maintained all the dungeons in the country of Aspatria, decreed that anyone who had either turned twenty years of age in the six months prior to September 1st, or would turn twenty years of age in the six months following, were allowed to try out for diving licenses.
And there was nothing in this world that I wanted more than to be a dungeon diver. Not just any diver though, but the one who completed the Path of Progression.
The Path of Progression was comprised of the Big Five dungeons of Aspatria. They were ranked from easiest to hardest, and only the most talented and experienced divers completed all five of them. If you managed to defeat the boss at the bottom of the fifth dungeon, you were rewarded with more riches than you knew what to do with as well as more fame than you could possibly imagine.
It wasn’t just the riches that drew me though. It was the sense of adventure. It was testing myself in ways that I’ve never been tested. There was also a legacy aspect to it as well, as I was reminded that morning when I entered the kitchen for breakfast.
My mother was standing over the toaster right as two waffles popped into the air. She caught them with the help of the plate and then dropped three dollops of butter on each of them in the shape of a smiley face. To complete the plate, she drizzled some syrup on each of them.

"Twice-Told Tales" by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a collection of short stories that displays the author's unique style and versatility as a writer. The tales are set in New England during the colonial and early national periods, and feature Hawthorne's characteristic themes of sin, guilt, and redemption. The title "Twice-Told Tales" refers to the idea that each story is not just being told once, but rather has a history, a past life, and a deeper meaning that is revealed through the telling. In these stories, Hawthorne explores the dark corners of the human soul, and exposes the moral ambiguities that lie at the heart of human experience.
