Summary

Learn to be comfortable with change. Increase your tolerance for uncertainty.

Chaos and unpredictability dominate our world- affecting even the smallest of events. We often cannot predict how seemingly insignificant actions will alter our lives. This may lead us into rash decisions driven by the urge to regain control and quickly fix problems. But poorly considered decisions often create more problems for us than they solve.

If you can’t fight something, get to know it and use it to your advantage.

This book is a primer on nonlinear system dynamics and chaos; how these forces shape our world and how to overcome their adverse effects. Reading this book will teach you to prepare for unpredictable events, and give you the tools to navigate the challenges of a chaotic world. The Systems Thinker – Dynamic Systems sheds light on why sometimes life sometimes unfolds counterintuitively to expectations, how small changes can lead to tremendously big ones over time.- Learn the difference between linear and nonlinear systems and their effect on your life.- Deepen your knowledge about the additivity and homogeneity principle.- How to use synergy and interference in real life?- What are feedback loops and how can they generate equilibrium?

Explore and fix the “problems that never seem to go away”.

- Detailed introduction to chaos theory and the butterfly effect.- Learn the importance of exponentials, power laws, long-tail distribution, phase transitions, bifurcation, and strange attractors.- Discover the world of fractals.Get introduced to the world of chaos. Learn about the Raleigh-Benard instability, Metcalf’s Law, Edward Lorenz’s discovery of the Butterfly Effect, Benoit Mandelbrot’s concept of fractals, the Koch snowflake and others. Incorporate the concept of chaos and unpredictability into your life to –counterintuitively – find more peace, and predictability.

Because of their enormous size, elephants have long been irresistible for kings as symbols of their eminence. In early civilizations—such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Civilization, and China—kings used elephants for royal sacrifice, spectacular hunts, public display of live captives, or the conspicuous consumption of ivory—all of them tending toward the elephant’s extinction. The kings of India, however, as Thomas R. Trautmann shows in this study, found a use for elephants that actually helped preserve their habitat and numbers in the wild: war.             Trautmann traces the history of the war elephant in India and the spread of the institution to the west—where elephants took part in some of the greatest wars of antiquity—and Southeast Asia (but not China, significantly), a history that spans 3,000 years and a considerable part of the globe, from Spain to Java. He shows that because elephants eat such massive quantities of food, it was uneconomic to raise them from birth. Rather, in a unique form of domestication, Indian kings captured wild adults and trained them, one by one, through millennia. Kings were thus compelled to protect wild elephants from hunters and elephant forests from being cut down. By taking a wide-angle view of human-elephant relations, Trautmann throws into relief the structure of India’s environmental history and the reasons for the persistence of wild elephants in its forests.

With so much rapid change, how can leaders adapt their decision making for success? In Time is Now, Raj Verma takes readers on a journey to demystify AI and the future of decision making. Through both personal and professional reflections, Verma shows the power of Now as a convergence of Information, Context, and Choice:Information is data, the collection of memory which shapes our identity.Context is the analysis of all information in the present.Choice is focused on the future, approached with courage and conscience. From these three pillars of Now, we write our future—for better or worse. How can we leverage artificial intelligence to amplify our own intelligence? By demystifying AI, can we demystify ourselves? In the past century, average life expectancies have nearly doubled, and today, for the first time in human history, many people have a realistic chance of living to eighty or beyond. As life expectancy increases, Americans need accurate, scientifically grounded information so that they can take full responsibility for their own latter years. In The Art and Science of Aging Well, Mark E. Williams, MD, discusses the remarkable advances that medical science has made in the field of aging and the steps that people may take to enhance their lives as they age.The Art and Science of Aging Well gives a realistic portrait of how aging occurs and provides important advice for self-improvement and philosophical, spiritual, and conscious evolution. Williams argues that we have considerable choice in determining the quality of our own old age. Refuting the perspective of aging that insists that personal, social, economic, and health care declines are persistent and inevitable, he takes a more holistic approach, revealing the multiple facets of old age. Williams provides the resources for a happy and productive later life.

A FULL CAST PERFORMANCE, FEATURING HOLLYWOOD ACTORS, SOUND EFFECTS, AND AN ORIGINAL SCORE!
From the authors of the New York Times bestseller, The Barefoot Spirit, and the Audie Award finalist, genre-bending audiobook of the same name, comes a story of vision and invention, failure and setbacks, mistakes and lessons. Business Audio Theatre presents a Sherwood Players Production, The Brain Savers, the true story of how a scrappy startup used technology to put the humanity of patients first and ended up changing medicine forever.
Amid the internet boom of the mid-2000s, a band of entrepreneurs stood at the intersection of medicine, technology, and business. They saw a solution to the crucial problems of emergency care, which was too often handicapped by underfunding, overscheduled specialists, archaic practices, and onerous equipment. Through pioneering telemedicine and new inventions like the portable CT scanner, the founders of Specialists on Call (S.O.C.) did more than just make emergency care better, faster, and more humane; they brought health care, which is often described as the slowest industry in America to change, into the 21st Century.
This is Dr. Colin McDonald’s story of how S.O.C. came to be. After leaving a cushy teaching position at Harvard, it took years of pursuing a single objective, then changing on a dime, to create S.O.C. In the end, what he created was a system that saved lives—and continues to save lives today.
Some of these hard-learned lessons are complex, while others are so timeless they almost sound cliché (“trust your vision and your moral compass, change when you must, just keep going”), but they are far from cliché for the founders of S.O.C. Theirs is a story of people with imagination and drive who wanted to make the world better, who trusted their ideas and each other, and who, despite everything, kept on going!
