~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~
“Joy,” he said, trying to get his heartbeat under control. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m scared,” she said. Lightning flashed, followed almost immediately by a ragged snarl of thunder. She cringed visibly at the light and noise. “Can I…can I sleep with you tonight?”
It wasn’t just a bad idea. It was a horrible idea. But Joy looked so frightened, flinching at every peal of thunder and rattle of hail on the roof, that Alan couldn’t turn her away. “All right.”
He moved over in the king-sized bed, making room. Joy burrowed under the blankets like a kitten, coming to rest with her head on his shoulder and one arm across his chest.  She was shaking, Alan realized, and he wondered what childhood trauma made her fear storms so much.
“You feel warm,” she whispered, her breath warm on his cheek. “Safe. Thank you, Uncle Alan.”
He twitched a shoulder, uncomfortable. “It’s okay.”
“No. I mean it.” She blinked up at him. “Thank you. For reaching out to us. For giving us the money. For letting us live here with you. For…for everything. I know it. Glory does, too, though she probably won’t ever say so. You saved us. Thank you.”
“It’s all right.” He kissed the top of her head, her hair tickling his nose, and she made a low contented sound, relaxing against him. Lightning flashed again, followed by thunder, but this time Joy’s breathing stayed steady.
Which was a shame, Alan thought uncomfortably. Because if his niece was scared of the storm, she might not notice the absolutely enormous erection that was growing under the blankets. He tried everything he could think of to control it, but his body had other ideas. All it knew was that he had a warm, soft, female body sprawled on top of him, and it was signaling its enthusiastic appreciation of the fact.
He couldn’t tell when Joy noticed. But obviously she did. There was a change to the way her body felt. But it wasn’t the horrified stiffening in shock and disgust he had feared and expected. No. Not that. It was the slow, languid shift as a woman who had been thinking about sleep turned her attention to the possibility of lovemaking.
She snuggled in closer. But now her hand was moving, tracing idle patterns on his chest. “Glory would shit herself if she saw us together,” she whispered. “She’s always talking about how hot you are. I swear, if you weren’t our uncle, she would have spread her legs for you the day we met.”
“Joy…”
“But I’m here now.” She kissed him through his shirt. He could almost imagine he felt the fever-heat of her lips on his skin. “And you’ve got a boner for me. Don’t you?”
“Joy.” His voice was unsteady. He put his hands on her hips, trying to restrain her. “You can’t trust a damn thing that thing says. Ignore it.”
She pouted. “You mean that you don’t think I’m sexy, Uncle Alan?” She shifted, one leg moving over his, straddling him. No. Not straddling him. Grinding on him, her t-shirt hiking up so that she could press the mound of her sex into the muscles of his thigh. Press down, again and again, shameless and carnal and wanton. “I’m not like Glory,” she whispered. “She’s a slut and everyone knows it.”
The muscles in Alan’s arms bunched. By God, if he had to he would throw his niece out of his bed and onto the floor-
“I’m a slut, too.” Her teeth fastened on the lobe of his ear, nipping playfully.
“But no one knows it.
“No one but you.”
    Even in the midst of a nationwide surge of bias and incidents, Asians from coast to coast have quietly assumed mastery of the nation's technical and intellectual machinery and become essential American workers. Yet, they've been forced to do so in the face of policy proposals—written in the name of diversity—excluding them from the upper ranks of the elite.
    Journalist Kenny Xu traces elite America's longstanding unease about a minority potentially upending them. Leftist agendas, such as eliminating standardized testing and lumping Asians into "privileged" categories have spurred Asian Americans to act.
    Going beyond the Students for Fair Admission (SFFA) v. Harvard case, Xu unearths the skewed logic rippling countrywide, from former Mayor Bill de Blasio's attempted makeover of New York City's Specialized School programs to the battle over "diversity" quotas in Google's and Facebook's progressive epicenters, to the rise of Asian American activism.
    An Inconvenient Minority chronicles the political and economic repression and renaissance of a long ignored racial identity group—and how they are central to reversing America's cultural decline and preserving the dynamism of the free world.
    The Pilgrims - History and...
    The Pilgrims, also known as the Pilgrim Fathers, were a group of English settlers who made the historic journey across the Atlantic on the Mayflower and founded the Plymouth Colony in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. The colony was named after the port of Plymouth in England, which had been the final departure point for their voyage. The Pilgrims were part of a religious movement rooted in the Puritan faith, but with distinct beliefs that set them apart from other Puritans at the time.
    The Pilgrims were part of a religious group called the Brownists, or Separatists, who believed that the Church of England was beyond reform. They shared many of the same Calvinist and Puritan religious convictions as the broader Puritan community, particularly in their emphasis on personal piety, Bible study, and the rejection of Catholic practices. However, unlike other Puritans, the Pilgrims felt that the Church of England was corrupt and that their congregations should be completely separate from it. This belief led them to seek religious freedom in places where they could practice their faith without interference from the English state church, which they saw as a violation of their spiritual beliefs.
    Initially, the Pilgrims found refuge in Holland, where they lived for several years in the city of Leiden. The Netherlands offered a more tolerant environment for religious dissenters, allowing them to practice their faith freely. However, the Pilgrims faced challenges in Holland, including economic difficulties and concerns about the erosion of their cultural identity. They eventually decided to seek a new home in the New World, where they could establish a society that would align with their religious principles.
    The Mythology of the Slavs -...
    Slavic mythology is a rich and complex tradition that has been shaped by centuries of oral storytelling, cultural exchanges, and historical transformations. Rooted in the beliefs of ancient Slavic tribes, this mythology reflects a deep connection to nature, a reverence for powerful deities, and a world teeming with spirits, gods, and legendary heroes. Unlike the more widely documented mythologies of the Greeks and Romans, Slavic myths were primarily passed down through oral tradition, making them fluid and ever-evolving. As a result, variations exist across different Slavic nations, yet common themes and figures remain central to the mythology as a whole.
    The natural world played a crucial role in shaping Slavic beliefs. The Slavs were deeply tied to the cycles of the seasons, the power of the sun, and the mysteries of the forests and rivers. Deities like Perun, the god of thunder, and Veles, the god of the underworld, represented the dual forces of order and chaos, life and death. Forest spirits like the Leshy guarded the woods, while the Rusalka, eerie water nymphs, were believed to lure unsuspecting travelers to a watery grave. These myths not only explained the forces of nature but also provided a spiritual framework for daily life.
    Storytelling was the primary means of preserving these myths. Legends were shared around fires, during village gatherings, and at seasonal festivals. Oral tradition allowed for constant reinterpretation, with each storyteller adding new details to fit the cultural and historical context of their time. Folklore heroes, such as Ilya Muromets and Dobrynya Nikitich, emerged as symbols of courage and perseverance, their tales reinforcing the values of strength, loyalty, and wisdom. These stories also carried moral lessons, cautioning against greed, deceit, and disrespect for the natural and supernatural world.
  • The Principal Speeches of Demosthenes - A Selection - cover
    The Principal Speeches of...
    Demóstenes
    Demosthenes (384-322 BCE) is regarded as one of the greatest orators of Classical times. This view has persisted through the centuries even though his rousing speeches warning of the dangers of Macedonian expansion - firstly guided by Philip II and then Alexander the Great - failed to stem the course of continued military success.
    A contemporary of Plato and Aristotle, it is said that Demosthenes undertook arduous measures to cure himself of a stammer by speaking with pebbles in his mouth and perfecting breath control. Starting as a speech writer, he made his mark at an unusually young age (for the time), delivering his first major public speech at the age of 30, advising Athens to build its naval fleet as a defence against the Persians. In fact, it was the ambition of Philip of Macedon that would prove the principal threat. This was recognised by Demosthenes, as shown by the main speeches included in this collection.
    In the 'Three Olynthiac Orations', Demosthenes outlined the tactics of Philip’s aggression towards Olynthus, an ally of Athens. He urged support for the smaller state, but his words went unheeded until it was too late. Demosthenes’s increasingly unrestrained language - at one point he calls Philip ‘a barbarian’ - did not endear him to the Macedonian regime.
    The 'Olynthiac Orations' are followed by the 'Three Philippics', which chart further military activity by the aforementioned Philip. In between the second and third 'Philippics' comes ‘On the Peace’: a speech given during a short diplomatic space engineered by Philip, but which Demosthenes clearly highlighted as an armistice rather than anything permanent. This ‘Philip’ section ends with ‘The Oration on the Letter'. Philip sent a letter to Athens, which implied that war, again, was imminent. Demosthenes responded with characteristic boldness.
    The final speech on this recording is ‘On the Crown’, addressing a very different matter. The Athenian statesman Ctesiphon proposed that Demosthenes should be honoured with the ‘golden crown’ for his service to the city. This was opposed by Aeschines, a long-standing enemy of Demosthenes in Athenian politics. In the court case that followed (330 BCE), Demosthenes successfully defended Ctesiphon in a speech later described as ‘the greatest speech of the greatest orator in the world'.
    Each of the orations in this collection is preceded with an introduction setting the scene, and outlining the context in which they were delivered. This also gives a concise picture of Athens at this difficult point in its history. Eight years later, when in danger of being captured and imprisoned by the young Alexander who was angered by decades of eloquent and unrestrained opposition, Demosthenes committed suicide. All the speeches are prefaced by the historical setting. Translations by Arthur Wallace Pickard and Charles Rann Kennedy.
