~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~
“Hey, punkin.”
I didn’t move as I felt a weight settle on my bed. I didn’t even turn my head. I just stared at the wall. “Hi, Daddy.”
There was a long pause. That’s the thing about Daddy. He’s good at waiting and listening. I guess it comes with the job. “Your mom sent me up here to see if you felt like talking about it. I guess Vinny kind of stepped on a rake, huh?”
“Vance, Daddy,” I sighed. “And yes.”
“Are you sure? He always looked like a Vinny to me. I think it was the weaselly look around his eyes. And the way he always stared at Riley.”
“Idiot,” I said into my pillow. “Mom wouldn’t touch him with a stick.”
“Of course she wouldn’t. Your mother is a very intelligent woman. Just like you.” I could hear the smile in his voice. “I’m sure you would have seen through him, eventually. I mean, if you’re going to pick a football player, Hope, you should at least get a star, not the second-string quarterback.”
I hiccupped out a laugh. “That’s better.” He put a hand on my back, rubbing in slow circles. He had done the same thing when I was a little girl and had been sick with a tummy-ache. It worked as good now as it had then. I could feel my body relaxing. All the anger and mad just…leaked away.
But it was replaced by…something else. Daddy wasn’t touching me in a sexy way. But it made me feel sexy anyway. Hot. Horny. A soft, sweet ache gathered in my belly, and I held very still, wishing I dared to touch myself.
Oh. And by the way, if you haven’t figured this out already, Daddy is just Hot As Hell. He’s like, forty years old now. But his lips are always smiling a little, and his eyes twinkle when he’s in a good mood, so it makes him look way younger than that. He’s maybe six-one, with dark hair, and he’s ripped enough to make you think God sent him to beat the sin out of you if you don’t straighten up and fly right. My girlfriends were always sighing and giggling about him when he wasn’t around, and teasing me for having a DILF as a father. I didn’t mind, mostly.
But now…now I really didn’t mind. I fact, I wanted more. Lots more.
    An urban neighborhood remakes itself every day—and unmakes itself, too. Houses and stores and streets define it in one way. But it’s also people—the people who make it their home, some eagerly, others grudgingly. A neighborhood can thrive or it can decline, and neighbors move in and move out. Sometimes they stay but withdraw behind fences and burglar alarms. If a neighborhood becomes no longer a place of sociability and street life, but of privacy indoors and fearful distrust outdoors, is it still a neighborhood?
    In the late 1960s and 1970s Carlo Rotella grew up in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood—a place of neat bungalow blocks and desolate commercial strips, and sharp, sometimes painful social contrasts. In the decades since, the hollowing out of the middle class has left residents confronting—or avoiding—each other across an expanding gap that makes it ever harder for them to recognize each other as neighbors. Rotella tells the stories that reveal how that happened—stories of deindustrialization and street life; stories of gorgeous apartments with vistas onto Lake Michigan and of Section 8 housing vouchers held by the poor.
    Blending journalism, memoir, and archival research, The World Is Always Coming to an End uses the story of one American neighborhood to challenge our assumptions about what neighborhoods are, and to think anew about what they might be if we can bridge gaps and commit anew to the people who share them with us. Tomorrow is another ending.
    At least one hysterectomy is performed every minute of the year, making it the most common gynecological surgery worldwide. By the age of sixty-five, one out of five people born with a uterus will have it removed. So, why do we seldom talk about this surgery? Highly performed yet overlooked, examining the paradox of hysterectomy begins to unravel the various problems with how we medically treat uteruses and the people who have them.
    Get It Out weaves centuries of medical history with rich qualitative data from 100 women, trans men, and nonbinary people who had, want, or are considering hysterectomy. In compelling detail, Andréa Becker reveals how America’s healthcare system routinely deprives people of the ability to control their own bodies along race and gender lines. When people ask for a hysterectomy, they are often met with pushback: Are you sick enough? Old enough? Have you had enough babies? Will you regret this? How will your future husband feel about this? Yet this pushback is not equally experienced. While some people are barred access, others are ushered toward a hysterectomy. These contradictory recommendations reveal the persistent biases entrenched within healthcare.
    Get It Out interrogates how little choice people with uteruses ultimately have over their reproductive health, and explores what these "choices" signify amid interlocking systems of inequality.
    A powerful new history of the idea of race, forcing us to rethink today’s culture wars.
    Is white privilege real? How racist is the working class? Why has left-wing antisemitism grown? Who benefits most when anti-racists speak in racial terms?
    The ‘culture wars’ have generated ferocious argument, but little clarity. This book takes the long view, explaining the real origins of ‘race’ in Western thought, and tracing its path from those beginnings in the Enlightenment all the way to our own fractious world. In doing so, leading thinker Kenan Malik upends many assumptions underpinning today’s heated debates around race, culture, whiteness and privilege.
    Malik interweaves this history of ideas with a parallel narrative: the story of the modern West’s long, failed struggle to escape ideas of race, leaving us with a world riven by identity politics. Through these accounts, he challenges received wisdom, revealing the forgotten history of a racialised working class, and questioning fashionable concepts like cultural appropriation.
    Not So Black and White is both a lucid history rewriting the story of race, and an elegant polemic making an anti-racist case against the politics of identity.
