Summary

The first handbook on reclaimed wood, combining useful information, rich history, and home design ideas.

Reclaimed wood is a gift from ancient forests and a versatile material. Our ancestors built their homes and barns, warehouses, and factories with white pine and oak from the Northeast and the Midwest, longleaf pine and cypress from the South, and Douglas fir and redwood from the Northwest. When we salvage these and other woods for new projects, we are strengthening our own roots.

Reclaimed Wood: A Field Guide is the first complete visual survey of this valuable resource, with chapters on history, sources, and types of wood, reclamation, and practical information, and its use in modern architecture and design.
Available since: 10/01/2019.
Print length: 384 pages.

For nearly eighty years, a huge portion of coastal South Africa was closed off to the public. With many of its pits now deemed "overmined" and abandoned, American journalist Matthew Gavin Frank sets out across the infamous Diamond Coast to investigate an illicit trade that supplies a global market. Immediately, he became intrigued by the ingenious methods used in facilitating smuggling—particularly, the illegal act of sneaking carrier pigeons onto mine property, affixing diamonds to their feet, and sending them into the air.Entering Die Sperrgebiet ("The Forbidden Zone") is like entering an eerie ghost town, but Frank is surprised by the number of people willing—even eager—to talk with him. Soon he meets Msizi, a young diamond digger, and his pigeon, Bartholomew, who helps him steal diamonds. It's a deadly game: pigeons are shot on sight by mine security, and Msizi knows of smugglers who have disappeared because of their crimes. From the mining towns of Alexander Bay and Port Nolloth to Kleinzee's shores littered with shipwrecks, Frank investigates a long overlooked story. Weaving interviews with local diamond miners who raise pigeons in secret with harrowing anecdotes from former heads of security, environmental managers, and vigilante pigeon hunters, Frank reveals how these feathered bandits became outlaws in every mining town.

From a James Beard award winner, “part memoir, part cookbook . . . fresh takes on traditional French cuisine, with small anecdotes that introduce each dish.”(Booklist)

Souvenirs is a memoir cookbook written by the multitalented Hubert Keller: celebrity chef, restaurateur, and Frenchman. Through personal stories and 120 recipes, the book explores his classical training and traces his development as a creative superstar chef. Keller apprentices in a Michelin three star–rated restaurant at the age of sixteen. He moves from his native Alsace, to southern France, and is inspired by the cuisine of the sun while working with the great French chefs of his time, Roger Vergé, Paul Bocuse, and Gaston Lenôtre. He learns to adapt to challenging new environments in South America, and the United States, and charts his own path into the newest frontiers of the restaurant business. The book is organized by seminal themes in Keller’s life, starting with his family in France, and ending back there again in the ”Holiday” chapter. The myriad recipes, which have been adapted for the home cook, are intertwined with 125 photographs by award-winning photographer Eric Wolfinger; images of family and friends, food and cuisine, and the places and landscapes of France, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, which all make up chef Keller’s life.

What makes the Ultimate Scot? Is it the ability to identify a tartan pattern from 50 yards? Maybe it's being able to recite the two forgotten verses of Auld Lang Syne? Or perhaps it's knowing your single malt from a double malt? The Ultimate Guide to Being Scottish examines in hilarious detail the history, politics and traditions that make Scots great. Exploring the best of scottish culture, this book focuses on the celebrations that Scots have made their own, from Hogmanay to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Mixing fact and practical hints (like the ideal recipe for boiled sheep's head) with witty banter, The Ultimate Guide to Being Scottish is perfect for injecting Scotland's unique and beloved brand of merriment into life.
