Satan's transformation from opaque functionary to chief antagonist is one of the most striking features of the development of Jewish theology in the Second Temple Period and beyond. Once no more than an "accuser" testing members of the human community, Satan, along with his demons, is presented by Jewish apocalyptic texts and the New Testament as a main source of evil in the world. In Satan and the Problem of Evil, noted scholar Archie Wright explores this dynamic in both its historical and theological trajectories.

Interactions with Zoroastrianism led Jewish and Christian writers of the Second Temple Period to separate God from responsibility for evil in the world. This led to the emergence of a heavenly being that is responsible for evil and suffering: Satan. Satan and the Problem of Evil charts the development of Satan traditions and the problem of evil from the Hebrew Bible and its various translations in the Greek Septuagint to Jewish literature from the Second Temple Period to the Greek New Testament. It concludes by examining the writings of the early church theologians, from the late first century through the fourth century CE. Wright argues that these latter writers present a shift in the understanding of Satan to one that is significantly different from the Jewish Scriptures, extrabiblical Jewish literature, and the New Testament.

“‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.’” — Malachi 3:1 0In these uncertain economic times, does it really make sense to tithe?Douglas LeBlanc thinks the answer is clear enough in Malachi 3:10, where God goes so far as to tell us, “Test me in this.” The people profiled in this book have done exactly that—and the effect on their lives has been dramatic. In these intimate journalistic portraits, LeBlanc shows us true tithing in action. From members of the clergy, to best-selling authors, to social activists both conservative and liberal, these are the lives of real people who tithe in joy and plenty, in the face of poverty and natural disaster, in community and missionally, and as a spiritual practice commanded   by God. They come from different backgrounds and live in varying degrees of financial comfort; but they all tithe—and wouldn’t have it any other way. Through their eyes, we come to understand this ancient practice as God’s call to a life of generosity, compassion, and joy.A study guide is included in the audiobook companion PDF download.

A study of the world’s religious movements and what their history says about society today.

The Human Calling is a vigorously researched and profoundly spiritual narrative history of the world’s religious movements as they relate to society’s collective understanding of the duties they have to fellow people and looks ahead to what lessons from history can be applied as people navigate a technological age.

Focusing on the rise and fall of spiritual movements in both the East and West, The Human Calling examines what the world’s major religions have historically offered, asks what people are here for outside of pure survival, and makes the persuasive argument for Christianity as the best leader to guide individuals on the path toward better caring for one another—our human calling. The Human Calling takes readers through humanity’s three great thought movements:The first is the Axial Age, the source of the first great human reflection on public spirit and public orderThe second is the twelfth to seventeenths centuries, wrestles with the question of whether people can attain individual rationality in God’s orderThe third delves into the independent reasoning societies of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and looks forward to what people want their third great reflection on God’s plan to be during their own period of societal flux
