A free media is inextricably linked to a healthy democracy, but in many parts of the world liberal democracies are deemed to be dying or on the demise—a demise that many forms of media have enabled while heralding themselves as democracy's savior. The hollowing out of democracy in these ways has left many people questioning the value of (neo)liberal democratic societies. What can we do about it?

Democratic Delusions explores the potential of our media and tech systems to be democratic and contribute to a just and transformative democracy. This is only possible, Natalie Fenton argues, by first situating our political systems and mediated worlds within global capitalism. By interrogating different media and their relationship to seven key elements of democracy—power, participation, freedom, equality, public good, trust, and hope—the book asks: What is the response of society when the ability of news media to speak truth to power has been restricted by corporate logic? And, how do we tackle a deep-rooted market logic that shifts public debate towards private interest and marginalizes progressive perspectives? The book explores how these elements can be reimagined through newly conceived media and tech landscapes and, ultimately, what democracy might be in a future mediated world that places more power in the hands of more people.

By the time of Egypt’s Nineteenth Dynasty, the Egyptians had created a vast empire that stretched from what would be the modern region of northern Sudan in the south to southern Syria in the north (Kuhrt 2010, 1:185). With control of such a vast empire, the Egyptians were able to export valuable minerals such as gold and silver, which were much rarer in the other Near Eastern kingdoms, and imported horses, timber, and chariots that they used to build their impressive military. A chronological examination of ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom reveals the process in which Egypt transitioned from a regional kingdom to an international empire. The examination will demonstrate that the New Kingdom was a fairly complex system that brought about several changes in pharaonic culture before ultimately collapsing.
Compared to some of their contemporaries – including the Egyptians, Assyrians, and Babylonians – the Hittites were somewhat distant both culturally and geographically. The Hittites were an Indo-European speaking in an ocean of Afro-Asiatic and Semitic groups, their homeland was to the north of Mesopotamia, and it contained no major river like the Nile, Tigris, or Euphrates Rivers. The Hittite empire was also far less enduring than its neighbors, as it only existed from about 1800-1200 BCE (van de Mieroop 2007, 156), which was considerably shorter than most of the other major kingdoms of the Near East.
Like a number of ancient individuals and empires in that region, the negative perception of ancient Assyrian culture was passed down through Biblical accounts, and regardless of the accuracy of the Bible’s depiction of certain events, the Assyrians clearly played the role of adversary for the Israelites. Indeed, Assyria (Biblical Shinar) and the Assyrian people played an important role in many books of the Old Testament and are first mentioned in the book of Genesis.

Technocracy is a concept that has evolved over time, yet its core principles remain focused on the idea that governance should be driven by scientific knowledge and technical expertise rather than political ideologies or populist sentiments. The term "technocracy" was first introduced in the early 20th century by engineers and economists who believed that the efficient management of resources and societal development could only be achieved through the application of scientific principles. Technocrats argued that political leaders, often with little to no understanding of complex systems, were ill-equipped to make decisions that could optimize society’s functioning, particularly in times of rapid industrialization and technological advancement.
The origins of technocracy can be traced back to the industrial revolution, when technological innovations began reshaping economies and societies. However, the movement gained significant traction in the early 1930s during the Great Depression, a period of economic turmoil that called into question traditional governance models. During this time, scholars like Howard Scott and engineers from the Technocratic Movement in the United States called for the establishment of a technocratic society where engineers, scientists, and other experts would manage the economy based on data-driven decision-making rather than political influence. They believed that such a system would eliminate inefficiencies, social inequalities, and the corruption they associated with political governance.

After taking power, the ANC implemented its policy of cadre deployment. It sought command of all levers of power, from the Cabinet, through the civil service, down to municipal level.
Despite the party recently lasing its majority, cadre deployment will ensure that the ANC maintains its iron grip on power and patronage, and it remains fused with the state.
In The Super Cadres, bestselling author Pieter du Toit exposes how Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki laid the foundation for complete ANC control of the state, how Jacob Zuma's ANC exploited it and why Cyril Ramsphosa is complicit in the destruction that followed.
It is a searing critique of the ANC's desire for untrammelled power.

The author asks then suggests: What weapons do we have to defend ourselves against deeply hidden assaults from the past? Without the fragments of memory linked together into a full picture of our personal history, we may remain helpless victims.
Sex permeates Vernetta’s traumatic young life while living with her single mother and older sister. The chaos of life with Mother and her alcohol-fueled anger emerges in Vernetta’s adult years as a suicidal-depression that propels her into therapy where conflicted personality fragments introduce themselves. Within months, dissociated-forgotten memories of sexual trauma are manifested by severe, incapacitating physical experiences.
Throughout her life, Vernetta manages to continue the relationship with her mother. Then after Mother’s death, Vernetta is motivated to search for answers to lingering-mystifying questions, her final pathway to wellness. Why did Mother deliberately burn down her family home at age fifteen? she asks herself. What is the truth of why baby brother Buddy was suddenly gone? And the last relentless question, Why was Mother so angry? Although the search plunges Vernetta into Mother’s murky past, the difficult answers bring restorative healing.
