Sinopsis

"Rise of Bioplastics" presents a comprehensive exploration of the transformative shift from traditional petroleum-based plastics to sustainable, renewable alternatives. This timely work examines how bioplastics are revolutionizing industries while addressing the global plastic waste crisis, offering a detailed analysis of both the scientific foundations and practical applications of these innovative materials.

The book skillfully bridges the gap between complex polymer science and real-world implementation, making it accessible to both technical professionals and environmentally conscious readers. The narrative progresses logically from historical context to cutting-edge developments, examining how materials derived from sources like corn starch, cellulose, and agricultural waste are being transformed into viable plastic alternatives.

Through evidence-based chapters, the book presents compelling case studies across various sectors, including packaging, automotive, and medical industries, demonstrating the practical potential of bioplastic technologies. Particularly fascinating is the book's examination of biodegradation rates and lifecycle analyses, which provide crucial insights into the environmental impact of these materials.

The work stands out for its balanced approach to controversial topics, such as the food-versus-materials debate in agriculture and varying international biodegradability standards. It combines technical precision with practical guidance, making it an invaluable resource for professionals in biotechnology, environmental engineering, and materials science. By integrating findings from multiple disciplines and providing detailed implementation strategies, the book offers a roadmap for industries transitioning to more sustainable material solutions while acknowledging current limitations and future possibilities.

The Honey Trap - How the Good...

    Dana L. Church

The last decade has seen an explosion of urban beekeeping in the US, Canada, and Europe, a well-intentioned response to perceived threats to the global honey bee population. Many thousands of people have taken up this seemingly environmentally friendly hobby, tending backyard and rooftop hives (or paying a company to do so) and encouraging honey bees to make honey and pollinate flowers. What could be wrong with that?

Quite a lot, in fact. In The Honey Trap, scientist and author Dana Church demonstrates that despite reports to the contrary, honey bees are nowhere near extinction. Rather, their nurturing by urban beekeepers is having far-reaching and potentially devastating consequences for the 19,999 other species of bees on the planet, with knock-on effects for plants, both cultivated and wild, and our ecosystems more generally.

With engaging storytelling and a wealth of knowledge about bees and their ways, Church unravels the complexities of human interactions with our winged friends and demonstrates how dangerously selfish our thinking can be. It's a wake-up call for humanity to embrace sustainable practices and protect these vital pollinators before it's too late.

    Hypnosis - Unlocking the Power...

Hypnosis has long captured the imagination of people worldwide. From ancient shamanic rituals to modern therapeutic practices, the concept of influencing the subconscious mind has evolved significantly. But what is hypnosis, and why does it hold such intrigue? This chapter sets the stage for an exploration of hypnosis, dispelling myths, uncovering truths, and providing a foundation for understanding its power and potential.

At its core, hypnosis is a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, often accompanied by deep relaxation. Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not about losing control or being at the mercy of someone else’s will. Instead, it is a collaborative process in which the subject actively engages with their subconscious mind. Hypnosis allows access to a realm of untapped potential within us, where behaviors, emotions, and even memories reside.

One of the most persistent myths surrounding hypnosis is its portrayal as mystical or magical. Popular culture has often depicted hypnotists as enigmatic figures wielding a pendulum to control unsuspecting subjects. These dramatizations have fueled skepticism and fear, overshadowing the scientific principles that underpin hypnosis. Understanding hypnosis requires recognizing that it is a natural phenomenon deeply rooted in human psychology and neuroscience.

    Trolling Ourselves to Death -...

    Jason Hannan

Almost forty years ago, Neil Postman argued that television had brought about a fundamental transformation to democracy. By turning entertainment into our supreme ideology, television had recreated public discourse in its image and converted democracy into show business. In Trolling Ourselves to Death, Jason Hannan builds on Postman's classic thesis, arguing that we are now not so much amusing, as trolling ourselves to death.

Contrary to the popular view of the troll as an exclusively anonymous online prankster, Hannan asserts that trolls have emerged from the cave, so to speak. Trolls now include politicians, performers, patriots, and protesters. What was once a mysterious phenomenon limited to the darker corners of the Internet has since gone mainstream, eroding our public culture and changing the rules of democratic politics.

Synthesizing media ecology with historical materialism, Hannan explores the disturbing rise of political unreason in the form of mass trolling and sheds light on the proliferation of disinformation, conspiracy theory, "cancel culture," and digital violence. Taking inspiration from Robert Brandom's innovative reading of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Trolling Ourselves to Death makes a case for building "a spirit of trust" to curb the epidemic of mass distrust that feeds the plague of political trolling.

    Galactic Mysteries - How Dark...

In the vast expanse of space, not everything we observe tells the full story. For centuries, astronomers believed that the stars, planets, gas clouds, and galaxies we could see were all there was to the universe. However, observations in the twentieth century began to suggest otherwise. The cosmos, as it turns out, is filled with something we cannot directly observe—something invisible yet undeniably present. This hidden substance came to be known as dark matter, and its discovery revolutionized our understanding of the universe.
The first real hints of dark matter came from studies of galaxies. When scientists examined how stars move within galaxies, they expected the outer stars to move more slowly than those near the center, based on the distribution of visible mass. However, what they found was shocking. Stars far from the center were moving at similar speeds as those near the core. This was only possible if there was a large amount of unseen mass exerting gravitational force throughout the galaxy. This discrepancy between the predicted and observed rotation speeds became one of the earliest and strongest pieces of evidence for the existence of dark matter.
At the same time, astronomers began noticing unusual behavior in galaxy clusters. These massive structures, made up of hundreds or even thousands of galaxies bound together by gravity, seemed to have more mass than what could be accounted for by visible matter alone. The galaxies were moving too fast to be held together by the gravity of the stars and gas we could detect. Something else, something invisible, had to be holding them in place. Again, the idea of an unseen mass emerged, one that made up the majority of the clusters’ mass.
