Sinopsis

"Concrete What?" delves into the ubiquitous material that forms the foundation of our modern world: concrete. This comprehensive exploration covers the historical development, chemical and physical properties, and applications of this versatile substance in modern construction. The book traces concrete's lineage from ancient Egyptian lime mortars to Roman hydraulic cement, providing context for its evolution and impact on civilization.

The central argument posits that concrete is not merely a building material, but a transformative technology shaping human society and addressing future challenges. From basic components and chemistry to cutting-edge applications like self-healing concrete, the book progresses logically through topics such as reinforced and high-performance varieties. It draws on scientific research, historical records, and case studies, incorporating insights from leading experts in the field.

By combining technical information with historical narrative and future speculation, "Concrete What?" offers a unique perspective on this crucial material. The book addresses ongoing debates, including the environmental impact of cement production and sustainable formulations, making it valuable for professionals, students, and general readers interested in technology, architecture, and the built environment.

Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian monk in the St. Thomas monastery in Brno. His seminal paper "Experiments on Plant Hybridization" presents his results of studying genetic traits in pea plants. It is the ground breaking work on inheritance, being the first to differentiate between dominant and recessive genetic traits. His work was long ignored and deemed controversial, however, at its rediscovery at the turn to the 20th century, it earned Gregor Mendel the title "father of modern genetics". (Summary by Availle)

The concept of canine consent is far more than simply a buzzword in modern dog training practices. In its current form, consent is a distinctly human concept, designed by humans and for humans. Looking beyond species boundaries can help us not only consider concepts of canine consent and autonomy, but it can also help us to apply these concepts in our everyday interactions with dogs, which is fundamental for any professional working with dogs as well as for everyday dog caregivers. This canine-indexed definition of consent includes a model of five major categories: Touch/interaction-based consent, cooperative care using learned consent behaviors, activity consent, consent-based learning, and substitutive consent. These categories involve a two-way communication system, integration of salient choices, teaching consent behaviors and incorporating existing training protocols that adhere to the Humane Hierarchy of best practices, and an evaluation of dependent decision-making in extenuating circumstances. This book aims to merge the existing literature and new understandings about canine consent to paint a complete picture. It will challenge the current expectations of dogs and dog behavior in our society with an intention of considering their perspectives, experiences, and emotional needs.
