Sinopsis

Landslides are a type of natural disaster that involve the downward movement of a mass of soil, rocks, and debris on a slope or hillside. They can occur in various forms, such as rockfalls, rockslides, mudslides, or debris flows, depending on the materials involved and the velocity of movement.Landslides are typically triggered by a combination of factors, including heavy rainfall, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, erosion, changes in groundwater level, slope instability, or human activities such as construction and deforestation. These factors can weaken the stability of the slope, causing it to fail and result in the movement of materials downslope. The destructive power of landslides can be significant, as they can damage or destroy structures, roads, and infrastructure in their path. They can also lead to loss of life and cause severe environmental damage, particularly when they occur in populated areas or near water bodies. To mitigate the risks associated with landslides, various measures can be taken, including slope stabilization techniques, land-use planning to avoid vulnerable areas, early warning systems, and emergency preparedness. It is important for communities living in landslide-prone areas to be aware of the potential hazards and take appropriate precautions to minimize the impact of such events. Certain plants and trees can play a role in preventing landslides by stabilizing slopes and reducing soil erosion.

The extraordinary secret life of a great novelist, which his biographer could not publish while le Carré was alive.

Secrecy came naturally to John le Carré, and there were some secrets that he fought fiercely to keep. Adam Sisman's definitive biography, published in 2015, provided a revealing portrait of this fascinating man; yet some aspects of his subject remained hidden.
Nowhere was this more so than in his private life. Apparently content in his marriage, the novelist conducted a string of love affairs over five decades. To these relationships he brought much of the tradecraft that he had learned as a spy - cover stories, cut-outs and dead letter boxes. These clandestine operations brought an element of danger to his life, but they also meant deceiving those closest to him. Small wonder that betrayal became a running theme in his work.
In trying to manage his biography, the novelist engaged in a succession of skirmishes with his biographer. While he could control what Sisman wrote about him in his lifetime, he accepted that the truth would eventually become known. Following his death in 2020, what had been withheld can now be revealed.
The Secret Life of John le Carré reveals a hitherto-hidden perspective on the life and work of the spy-turned-author and a fascinating meditation on the complex relationship between biographer and subject. “Now that he is dead,” Sisman writes, “we can know him better.”

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up became a #1 New York Times bestseller for simple reasons…
(Notice: This is a SUMMARY of Marie Kondo’s bestseller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing)
Marie Kondo’s unique approach to tidying changes lives. Both her book, The Life-changing Magic of Tidying, and her Netflix series have caught the attention – and application – of millions. And those millions sing her praises.
How has this petite Japanese woman persuaded so many people to joyfully and eagerly do what parents have been begging their children to do for ages? Why are people posting pictures on Instagram and Facebook of neatly folded shirts and shorts, lined up in drawers like soldiers, awaiting the opportunity to be put to use by their owner? Is there any way that you, too, could implement her system in your own home and life?
Millions of people have learned from the woman The London Times calls “Japan’s preeminent guru of tidiness, a warrior princess in the war on clutter.” You’ll learn why you can’t seem to stay organized no matter what you’ve tried, in which order to tidy your items, and how to tidy them well (including the KonMari folding technique). You’ll come to understand how and why tidying up can revolutionize your entire life and build the ability to discern what brings you joy.
If you truly resonate with Marie Kondo’s concepts we implore you to buy her full audiobook once you’re done!

The Women Are Up to Something -...

On the cusp of the Second World War, four women went to Oxford to begin their studies: a fiercely brilliant Catholic convert; a daughter of privilege longing to escape her stifling upbringing; an ardent Communist and aspiring novelist with a list of would-be lovers as long as her arm; and a quiet, messy lover of newts and mice who would become a great public intellectual of our time. They became lifelong friends. At the time, only a handful of women had ever made lives in philosophy. But when Oxford's men were drafted in the war, everything changed.

As Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and Iris Murdoch labored to make a place for themselves in a male-dominated world, as they made friendships and families, and as they drifted toward and away from each other, they never stopped insisting that some lives are better than others. They argued that courage and discernment and justice—and love—are the heart of a good life.

This book presents the first sustained engagement with these women's contributions: with the critique and the alternative they framed. Drawing on a cluster of recently opened archives and extensive correspondence and interviews with those who knew them best, Benjamin Lipscomb traces the lives and ideas of four friends who gave us a better way to think about ethics, and ourselves.

It might come as a surprise to some people but there are actually quite a few sex scenes in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. In this episode, we shall dive into 19th-century courtship and how Alcott writes about courtship etiquette. Laurie is based on Alcott's ex and Friedrich to a man she wanted to marry. In this book we will examine Jo's relationships and how they correlate with Alcott's personal life. Louisa May Alcott had a huge crush on her father´s best friend philosopher Waldo Emerson. Louisa wrote love letters to him but she never sent them and she used to sit under his window singing "Migon´s song". Mignon´s song is a song from Goethe´s novel, Wilhelm Meister´s apprenticeship, which was one of Alcott´s favourite books. Emerson was one of the many models for Friedrich. The main model was philosopher Henry Thoreau who merited Louisa´s lifelong affection.

As a long-time, die-hard Little Women fan, I LOVE this podcast! I stumbled upon it while doing research for a book series I was working on, and I am addicted! Niina is super knowledgeable in all things LW, from the book(s) to the movies and author Louisa May Alcott’s real life. I love that the discussions are based on the book and highlight the differences (sometimes controversial) between the original and newer adaptations. Highly recommended for anybody who loves getting lost in the world of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March.
