'The Miner at Home ' was written by D H Lawrence in 1912. Lawrence is at his best in this story, taken from the scenes of his childhood and based on characters he knew intimately. The scene can hardly be called a story in the traditional sense, being the altercation between a miner and his wife over an impending strike but as a picture of a working miner’s family, rich in detail and the Nottinghamshire dialect, it has a fascination and vividness.

Elizabeth Burgoyne Corbett was born on the 16th August 1846 at Standishgate, near Wigan.
After a good education she worked as a journalist for the Newcastle Daily Chronicle and went on to become a widespread and popular writer of adventure and society novels.
As a feminist writer it is a little bizarre that she published as Mrs George Corbett. Her most ardent feminist work was ‘New Amazonia: A Foretaste of the Future,’ though other of her works were also similarly themed and dealt with one of the great issues of the day in Victorian society.
She married George Corbett in Sheffield in 1868. They went on to have 4 children, of which only 3 survived.
As a writer she was not overly prolific but was perhaps most admired for her female detectives. During her literary career Detective books were all the rage and authors of both sexes attempted to bring new and unusual angles of characters and narratives before the voracious public.
Corbett’s first was in a collection of short stories ‘Adventures of a Lady Detective featuring Dora Bell'. A later novel introduced a further detective in the guise of Annie Cory.
Elizabeth Corbett died on in 1930.

Victor-Marie Hugo (26 February 1802 - 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, essayist, playwright, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. During a literary career that spanned more than sixty years, he wrote abundantly in an exceptional variety of genres: lyrics, satires, epics, philosophical poems, epigrams, novels, history, critical essays, political speeches, funeral orations, diaries, and letters public and private, as well as dramas in verse and prose.
BOOK 5: THE EXCELLENCE OF MISFORTUNE: Life became hard for Marius. It was nothing to eat his clothes and his watch. He ate of that terrible, inexpressible thing that is called de la vache enragé; that is to say, he endured great hardships and privations.

"one of the best horror stories ever written. Maybe the best in the English language." - Stephen King
A tense and creepy horror story, The Great God Pan revolves around the mysterious "Mrs Vaughan" and the tide of death she leaves in her wake. Can she be stopped? What connection does she have to a certain illegal experiment performed some twenty years earlier? Or horrendous goings on at a sleepy welsh rural village? Inspired by his experiences at the ruins of a pagan temple in Wales. "The Great God Pan" received positive approval from Oscar Wilde, Lovecraft and others, and is considered a Horror Masterpiece.
    Narrated by Michael Ward.

"The Pink Stocking" by Anton Chekhov is a short story that unfolds on a dreary, rainy day with Pavel Petrovitch Somov, feeling bored and restless, pacing in his study. His wife, Madame Somov, is described as a pretty little lady wearing a light blouse and pink stockings, busily writing a letter to her sister Varya. Curious and looking for a distraction, Somov asks to read the letter and, while initially disinterested, he becomes increasingly concerned and confused as he progresses through the pages. Upon finishing the letter, he reacts with shock and disbelief, flinging the sheets on the table and uttering that the content is "beyond anything" and "positively incredible." The story hints at a marital dynamic filled with secrets and perhaps suggests that Madame Somov has written something unexpected or alarming, leaving both the character and the reader with a sense of perplexity and intrigue.
