Summary

Environmental themes are present in cinema more than ever before. But the relationship between film and the natural world is a long and complex one, not reducible to issues such as climate change and pollution. This volume demonstrates how an awareness of natural features and dynamics can enhance our understanding of three key film-studies topics – narrative, genre, and national cinema. It does so by drawing on examples from a broad historical and geographical spectrum, including Sunrise, A River Called Titas, and Profound Desires of the Gods. The first introductory text on a topic which has long been overlooked in the discipline, Film and the Natural Environment argues that the nonhuman world can be understood not just as a theme but as a creative resource available to all filmmakers. It invites readers to consider some of the particular strengths and weaknesses of cinema as communicator of environmental phenomena, and collates ideas and passages from a range of critics and theorists who have contributed to our understanding of moving images and the natural world.

If you want to learn about oil drilling as a beginner, then check out this book!
How to drill an oil and gas well from A to Z, or in a shorter form from one to seven.
The first step is to determine what type of rock we will be drilling. The second step is to refine this preliminary well configuration by determining the exact dimensions required of casing strings. Afterwards, the third stage is to select the appropriate bits, bottom hole assembly (BHA), and drillstring for each hole section.
The fourth step is a big one, selecting a rig, which goes hand in hand with the abovementioned characteristics of drilling a well. Eventually, we get a shortlist and go to the market to close the best fit for purpose rig contract. The fifth step is the huge logistics framework that surrounds a drilling operation to ensure it goes smoothly and most important of all, for safety to prevail. The sixth step is to plug and abandon the well. Gladly, strict regulations have been put in place to ensure industry best practices are always followed.
Last but not least, the seventh step encompasses all of the previous six, which is to assess and mitigate the environmental impact of all the operations. Safety is, from the beginning until the end of oil and gas drilling, the number-one priority.
HowExpert publishes quick 'how to' guides on all topics from A to Z by everyday experts.

    Beyond Informational Thinking To...

Glenn Parry believes that the way to cure our planetary challenges begins with a return to original thinking. The way we think and interact with nature and each other, he says, affects everything. As long as we divide things up as animate and inanimate, as living and not living we will continue to destroy the earth. “If there’s one thing I would like to change in Western culture, it’s to remember and restore the understanding that all the elements are alive.” There has been a shift to linear thinking which he says is not our natural way. He explains that the ancient Greeks were interested in how things come together in harmony. The word “rational” comes from “ratio” or a relationship between things. “And this is totally the opposite of what rational thought has become today where it’s a fragmented, degraded form of rationality which is no longer connected to a sensuous living universe.” He opens up about his personal experiences of learning and thinking, listening and being, and shares stories that offer deep insights into the living roots of wisdom and the origin of thinking. This is the story of talking at a distance, of sending messages through space. It is the story of great men—Morse, Thomson, Bell, Marconi, and others—and how, with the aid of men like Field, Vail, Catty, Pupin, the scientist, and others in both the technical and commercial fields, they succeeded in flashing both messages and speech around the world, with wires and without wires. It is the story of how the thought of the world has been linked together by those modern wonders of science and of industry—the telegraph, the submarine cable, the telephone, the wireless telegraph, and, most recently, the wireless telephone. The story of the supersonic fighter with “interesting insight into the period of the 1950s and early 1960s, the Cold War and of course the war in Vietnam” (Military Modelling).   During the mid–1950s the United States Air Force was given its most powerful single-seat, two-engine fighter to date. The Voodoo would be deployed before the end of that decade in the tactical nuclear bomber and tactical reconnaissance roles worldwide, and in homeland defense with the two-seat, all-weather variant. In December 1957 it took the World Air Speed Record to Mach 1.6—over one and a half times faster than the sound barrier.   This book looks at the evolution of the original design and its introduction into service. Chapters cover operations in Korea, Vietnam, the Cuban Crisis and in Europe during the Cold War years. Many first-hand accounts from pilots are included and the author’s own experiences with the aircraft are given with fascinating insight.   The Voodoo was an elegant, mean-looking fighting machine that epitomized fast flying in the fifties and sixties. It continues to be a revered airplane.   “Definitely a book that gives an in depth look at the Voodoo and the pilots who flew her.”—InScale.org
