  Rutherford Birchard Hayes (October 4, 1822 - January 17, 1893) was the 19th president of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. Hayes, a staunch abolitionist, left a fledgling political career to join the Union army as an officer. He was wounded five times, earning a reputation for bravery in combat, and rising in the ranks to serve as brevet major general. After the war, he served in Congress from 1865 to 1867 and was elected governor of Ohio, serving two consecutive terms from 1868 to 1872 and half of a third two-year term from 1876 to 1877 before his swearing-in as president. The following is a reading of President Grant's inaugural address delivered on March 05, 1877.

  Only a select few actors become international stars in their time, but none had as unique a career as Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin was the first true film star, and he managed to do so even when films were still silent. He has been honored with too many awards to count, and the fact that his name remains instantly recognizable nearly a century after his first film is a testament to his influence. Chaplin is known for the singular blend of pathos and humor evinced by his films, and it is not uncommon for audiences to laugh and cry at alternate points of a Chaplin film, a trait that continues to endear audiences even to this day. 
  In the 1920s, the burgeoning movie industry was starting to come into its own, and alongside actor and director Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton was at the peak of Hollywood. It’s no surprise that Keaton was so effective in silent films, because he had been practicing comedy in his family’s vaudeville acts as “The Little Boy Who Can’t Be Damaged”, becoming a popular performer by the age of 5. Indeed, his physical form of comedy, which initially involved having his father throwing him around the stage, translated well onto the screen, and some of his slapstick and other comic gags remain legendary even today, in part because Keaton practiced his own stunts.  
  Everything about Rudolph Valentino, from his body to the characters he played, was exotic. His career may have been abbreviated by his premature death at the age of 31, but Valentino popularized the (somewhat racist) stereotype of the “Latin lover” in Hollywood, and even his name was markedly more out of the ordinary than those of other actors. In an era dominated by hyper-masculine actors like Douglas Fairbanks, or comedians such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Valentino had a more ethnic and mysterious appeal, and he was lusted after by women to a degree that remains unsurpassed in the industry.

  A Rare Recording of Jim Garrison

  Jim Garrison (1921-1992) was the District Attorney of Orleans Parish, Louisiana, from 1962 to 1973. He is best known for his investigations into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Garrison was able to subpoena the Zapruder film from Life magazine. As a result, the American public was able to see the film for the first time. Garrison made the case that the Kennedy assassination was too complex to be carried out by Oswald alone. Later, he was played by Kevin Costner in Oliver Stone's 1991 feature film, "JFK." This recording is part of a speech he gave on the assassination.

  The waters of the Pacific Ocean – stretching deep blue under the tropical sun, or scourged by typhoons – provided World War II's most far-flung battlefield. Two of the world's premier mid 20th century maritime powers, the United States of American and the Empire of Japan, grappled for supremacy across that vast expanse.  
  	Although not as well-remembered as D-Day or even the attack at Pearl Harbor that preceded it, the Battle of Midway was one of the most unique and important battles fought during World War II. In fact, the turning point in the Pacific theater took place between June 4-7, 1942 as a Japanese fleet moved a sizable fleet intending to occupy Midway Island and draw the American navy near. Instead, American aircraft flying from three aircraft carriers that had been away from Pearl Harbor in December 1941 got a bearing on the Japanese fleet and sunk four Japanese aircraft carriers, permanently crippling Japan’s navy. The Battle of Midway was one of the first major naval battles in history where the enemy fleets never actually saw or came into contact with each other.  
  	By the time the Battle of Midway was over, the defeat was so devastating that it was actually kept secret from all but the highest echelons of the Japanese government. Along with the loss of hundreds of aircraft and over 3,000 men killed, the four Japanese aircraft carriers lost, when compared to America’s one lost carrier, was critical considering America’s huge shipbuilding superiority. However, the Battle of Midway could also have easily turned out differently.

This history is one of resilience, conflict, adaptation, and, ultimately, an ongoing quest for reconciliation. Understanding this shared past is essential to appreciating modern New Zealand’s identity and the challenges that continue to shape its future. 
  The Māori, skilled navigators and settlers from Polynesia, developed a rich and sophisticated culture long before the arrival of Europeans. Their societal structures, traditions, and connection to the land formed the foundation of a thriving civilization. When Pākehā explorers and settlers arrived, they brought not only new technologies and trade but also new challenges. The introduction of muskets, Christianity, and foreign diseases altered the balance of power and drastically reshaped Māori society. 
  One of the most defining moments in New Zealand’s history was the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. This agreement, meant to establish a partnership between Māori and the British Crown, instead became a source of lasting controversy due to differences in interpretation and breaches of its promises. In the decades that followed, land disputes, armed conflicts, and government policies led to the large-scale alienation of Māori land, significantly impacting Māori communities and their way of life.
