Sinopsis

Are you constant voice in your head?

The voice that is always analyzing situations, finding problems, having opinions, being self-referential, self-centered. It’s begins from the moment you wake up, before even opening your eyes.

Thousands and thousands of thoughts just circling, forming, expanding, and at times exaggerating situations ALL DAY. Unceasing, endless thoughts. Telling you how to speak, react, which action to take. It is that voice OURS? Should we accept that?  What it says, must be true?

Someone asked him, How to make a beautiful life? And he replied, " There is no one answer to this question since beauty is subjective. However, some ways to make life more beautiful need wisdom, by which we can include filling our life with positive experiences, enjoying the little things, and staying in the moment. Additionally, surrounding yourself with things that bring you happiness can make our life more beautiful. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide what makes life beautiful for them.

Science, better diet, advanced medicines are all part of a process that in the modern age keep most of us going to a ripe old age.

In previous times some diseases could only be slowed and not defeated. There toil of relentless attack on our physical forms brought misery and decay.

Add to this that within our number some will self-destruct, demons will pursue their inner thoughts and life will be too painful to bear. Some may shuffle off the mortal coil for no discernible reason, but life will end early, they will not take up their three-score year and ten.

In this collection of short stories some of our most popular and well-known authors are grouped together with an unfortunate tag: dead at 40.

These authors are not run-of-the-mill or ten a penny; many are literary leviathans who left enduring works of literature and sadly may have left us many more had they lived. We will never know.

Death for these authors was usually due to many health issues but primarily:—
Edgar Allan Poe — Several causes have been given but, in truth, it remains a mystery.
    Franz Kafka — Tuberculosis
Jack London — Dysentery, late-stage alcoholism, and uremia
Mary Dods (writing as David Lyndsey) — Liver disease
William Hope Hodgson — Killed at the Fourth Battle of Ypres in World War 1

    01 - Dead at 40 - An Introduction
02 - The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe
03 - In the Penal Colony by Franz Kafka
04 - To Build a Fire by Jack London

Follow the thoughts of essayist, poet and American Transcendentalism founder Ralph Waldo Emerson as he discovered his own belief system in the anthology "Self-Reliance ." In "Self-Reliance," Emerson explained that standing on one's own two feet against society was essential to forming a strong union with God. Once this essay was published, it received both wild praise and hurtful backlash from different factions of America. However, Emerson pushed through the negative criticism, stood against the crowd, and found himself stronger in his faith than he ever had before. Emerson found that self-reliance, no matter the situation, would always help the individual persevere and become stronger. Because Emerson wrote for the common man, many of his essays and poems are relatively simple and straight-forward; he wanted audiences to understand his thoughts and identify with his beliefs. He also wanted to wake them up from the conventional modern life that he believed had often placated them. Emerson's writings were meant to help the reader transcend to a more thoughtful mindset. His essays discuss themes of philosophy, poetry, history, politics, ethics, and literary criticism, all of which helped break people from what he believed were their mediocre lives. He saw that humanity could become stronger as a whole if people would take the steps to make themselves and their minds stronger. The texts in "Self-Reliance" will not only inspire readers, but they will inspire self-examination and evaluation as well.

Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin (1799 – 1837) was a Russian author of the Romantic era who is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. He was notoriously sensitive about his own personal honour and is believed to have fought as many as twenty-nine duels... the last of which proved fatal for him.A duel is the crux of his masterful short story "The Pistol-Shot" - but it is a duel with a difference. It starts out normally enough... an insult, a challenge, a meeting with pistols at dawn. But when the first shot misses, the insolent nonchalence of the first shooter (who goes on eating cherries while is adversary takes aim) prompts the other dueller to delay taking his shot until such a time as shall suit him. He is determined to pick a moment when death will be most unwelcome and inconvenient for his adversary. One day a letter arrives for him... and he knows that the moment has come.
