Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this volume our authors present tales of dark, macabre, and disturbing deeds. From the pens of Nikolai Gogol, Miguel de Cervantes, Mor Jokai, E T A Hoffman and many others come carefully crafted literary journeys designed to disrupt reality, jangle nerves and feed upon our souls.

Ellen should have known that a gathering in America's last castle would entail a few uninvited guests. During a Christmas eve wedding at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, Ellen and her friends are visited by multiple ghosts. The spirits have come to tell their stories, to right the wrongs that history has done to their memories. Each of them died in Asheville with their voices stifled. One spirit is particularly adamant and threatening, despite her small size, and her mood fluctuates like the mountain winds surrounding the great estate. She claims to be the ghost of Zelda Fitzgerald, and she wants her story told, even if she has to kill to make it happen. Voted Best Mystery Book of the Year for 2022 at Utopia Con! The books in this series can be read in any order.

Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific English writer, now best remembered for his science fiction novels and often credited as being the father of science fiction"The Plattner Story" is the strange tale of Gottfried Plattner, the modern languages teacher at a private school in England, who while conducting a chemistry experiment, accidently causes a explosion. The results of the explosion are mysterious. First, Plattner disappears completely. Not a trace of him remains, despite the damage to the school being fairly minimal. For nine days, nothing is seen or heard of him, although many people locally have strange and very similar dreams about him. Second, after nine days, Plattner reappears in a very unusual and equally explosive manner. Third, when he reappears, he has been oddly transformed. His internal organs are all reversed. He is now left, instead of right-handed, and writes from right to left. Moreover, the tale of what happened to him during the nine days of his absence is quite extraordinary.
