Sinopse

Cynthia Daventry, the heroine of the story, grows up in Argentina as the adopted daughter of Robert and Jane Daventry, an English couple. Unable to have children themselves, they had adopted Cynthia at the age of three from a foundling hospital where she had been left by her dissolute father, James Glanville, following her mother’s death in an earthquake. Cynthia is unaware of her parentage, and is horrified when on her 17th birthday her natural father arrives unannounced to claim her, intending to force her into prostitution in Buenos Aires and live off the proceeds. The Daventrys flee back to England, where they live comfortably although Cynthia never shakes off her deep-rooted fears. After the Daventrys’ death, Cynthia marries Captain Harry Rames, an up-and-coming politician whom she had first admired years earlier when as a naval officer he had led an expedition to the Antarctic. She realises that Rames does not love her but hopes that he will in time. Meanwhile, she throws herself into furthering his political career, while secretly regretting that his activities are driven not by any inner conviction but by his desire to win power and influence. Some years later, in spite of Rames’ increasing success he quite suddenly loses interest in politics, though he hides the fact from Cynthia whom he has now started to love. For her part, Cynthia recognises a change and suspects that he might have taken a lover. When Rames eventually admits that his long-sublimated passion for the Antarctic has reasserted itself, Cynthia consents to his abandoning politics and leading a new expedition south. During the three years that Rames is away Cynthia goes back to live in her childhood home in Argentina. Ultimately, Rames returns safely to her.

The Frozen Deep is a powerful tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption set against the merciless backdrop of the Arctic wilderness. Written by Wilkie Collins, master of suspense and psychological drama, this novel explores the depths of human emotion when tested by jealousy, loyalty, and extreme survival.

The story follows two men bound by friendship yet divided by rivalry for the love of the same woman. When fate leads them on a perilous Arctic expedition, personal conflicts are thrust into a landscape of ice, isolation, and relentless danger. As the cold tightens its grip and survival becomes uncertain, past grievances resurface, forcing each character to confront their true nature. In the frozen silence of the polar night, courage and selflessness are measured at the highest cost.

Blending elements of adventure, romance, and moral drama, The Frozen Deep is more than a survival story—it is a profound examination of the human heart. Collins masterfully contrasts the harsh external environment with the inner struggles of his characters, showing how love and honor can endure even in the most unforgiving conditions.

Originally conceived as a stage play before being adapted into a novella, The Frozen Deep stands as an early example of Collins's ability to weave emotional intensity with dramatic tension. Fans of classic literature, psychological drama, and historical adventure will find this work both gripping and deeply moving.

A timeless story of sacrifice and moral awakening, The Frozen Deep remains a haunting reminder that true heroism is often revealed not in triumph, but in selfless devotion.

Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

Within these ten stories our authors including Edgar Allan Poe, H G Wells, Guy de Maupassant and a host of others demonstrate the power and the motivation that revenge demands. Yes, the pen is mightier and more brutal than the sword.
