Sinopse

In "Aspects of Modern Oxford, by a Mere Don," A. D. Godley presents a captivating exploration of contemporary life in Oxford, weaving together poignant reflections, scholarly insights, and vivid descriptions of the university's landscape. Through a combination of elegant prose and keen observation, Godley captures the juxtaposition of tradition and modernity within an institution steeped in history, while offering an intimate glimpse into the experiences of both faculty and students. His literary style, characterized by wit and erudition, resonates with readers familiar with the context of British higher education in the early 20th century, providing a richly textured narrative that transcends mere documentation and enters the realm of personal reflection and philosophical inquiry. A. D. Godley, a distinguished scholar and classicist, spent many years in academia, notably at Magdalen College, Oxford. His immersion in the academic life and intellectual vibrancy of the university likely inspired him to write this work, which serves as both a memoir and a manifesto of sorts. Godley'Äôs insights are informed not only by his academic rigor but also by his passion for the unique culture that characterizes Oxford, a blend of scholarship, camaraderie, and the pursuit of knowledge. Readers seeking to understand the intricate dynamics of modern academic life within a historic institution will find Godley'Äôs work both enlightening and engaging. "Aspects of Modern Oxford" is not merely for those affiliated with the university but for anyone interested in the evolution of educational culture and its societal implications. This book invites you to immerse yourself in an eloquent exploration of Oxford, viewed through the eyes of a reflective and observant scholar.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born on 29th January 1860 in Taganrog, on the south coast of Russia.
His family life was difficult; his father was strict and over-bearing but his mother was a passionate story-teller, a subject Chekhov warmed to. As he later said; ‘our talents we got from our father, but our soul from our mother’.
At school Chekhov was distinctly average. At 16 his father mis-managed his finances and was declared bankrupt. His family fled to Moscow. Chekhov remained and eked out a living by various means, including writing and selling short sketches to newspapers, to finish his schooling. That completed and with a scholarship to Moscow University obtained he rejoined his family.
He was able to help support them by selling satirical sketches and vignettes of Russian lifestyles and gradually obtained further commissions. In 1884, he qualified as a physician and, although it earned him little, he often treated the poor for free, he was fond of saying ‘Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my mistress.’
His own health was now an issue as he began to cough up blood, a symptom of tuberculosis. Despite this his writing success enabled him to move the family into more comfortable accommodation.
Chekhov wrote over 500 short stories which included many, many classics including ‘The Kiss’ and ‘The Lady with a Dog’. His collection ‘At Dusk’ won him the coveted Pushkin Prize when was only 26.
He was also a major playwright beginning with the huge success of ‘Ivanov’ in 1887.
In 1892 Chekhov bought a country estate north of Moscow. Here his medical skills and money helped the peasants tackle outbreaks of cholera and bouts of famine. He also built three schools, a fire station and a clinic. It left him with less time for writing but the interactions with real people gained him detailed knowledge about the peasantry and their living conditions for his stories.
His most famous work, ‘The Seagull’ was received disastrously at its premiere in St Petersburg. It was later restaged in Moscow to highlight its psychological aspects and was a huge success. It led to ‘Uncle Vanya’, ‘The Three Sisters’ and ‘The Cherry Orchard’.
Chekhov suffered a major lung hemorrhage in 1897 while visiting Moscow. A formal diagnosis confirmed tuberculosis and the doctors ordered changes to his lifestyle.
Despite a dread of weddings the elusive literary bachelor quietly married the actress Olga Knipper, whom he had met at rehearsals for ‘The Seagull’, on 25th May 1901.
By May 1904 with his tuberculosis worsening and death imminent he set off for the German town of Badenweiler writing cheerful, witty letters to his family and assuring them his health was improving.
On 15th July 1904 Anton Chekhov died at Badenweiler. He was 44.

Audio Snaps is a series of 100-minute audio books, each featuring a dozen or so stories from each of my five books. Black Vinyl White Powder is a bit different from the other books in that it was written as a continuous narrative moving through story after story. So the best way to fit it into the formula for the series was simply to read the first six chapters (later, I'll do the rest of the book). Black Vinyl White Powder is a history of the British pop music with insight into the recreational drugs of the the day and their relevance. Since I was there, and a part of it, it's very much written from my own point of view. The reviews when it was first published were exceptional, for instance - "One of the most authoritative, intelligent, diligently researched,
conscientiously indexed, and thoroughly unpretentious disquisitions on
the history of the British pop scene yet written." SUNDAY TELEGRAPH - "Napier-Bell provides a one-stop-shop education in what the music business – as opposed to the music itself – has always been about: get rich, get high, get laid." THE INDEPENDENT - "His preoccupation with trivia is what makes his book so compelling and informative. Napier-Bell knows that if you scratch the surface of pop music you will find more surface." In the spirit of his father's beloved classic, A River Runs through It, comes John N. Maclean’s true chronicle of his family and their bond with Montana's Blackfoot River—a profound and beautiful story about the power of place to bind generations, past and present
“Maclean’s Hemingway-esque prose is as clear as a mountain stream, flowing with a poetic cadence.” —Booklist
“The trout completed its curve in an undulating, revelatory sequence. A greenish speckled back and a flash of scarlet on silver along its side marked it as a rainbow. One slow beat, set the hook … in those first seconds I felt a connection to a fish of great size and power.""
So begins John N. Maclean's remarkable memoir of his family's century-long love affair with Montana's majestic Blackfoot River, which his father, Norman Maclean, made legendary. Now himself past the age that his father published his bestselling novella, Maclean returns annually to the simple family cabin that his grandfather built by hand, still in search of the fish of a lifetime. When he hooks it at last, decades of longing promise to be fulfilled, inspiring John, reporter and author, to finally write the story he was born to tell.
A book that will resonate with everyone who feels deeply rooted to a place, Home Waters is chronicle of a family who claimed a river, from one generation to the next, of how this family came of age in the 20th century and later as they scattered across the country, faced tragedy and success, yet were always drawn back to the waters that bound them together. Here are the true stories behind the beloved characters fictionalized in A River Runs Through It, including the Reverend Maclean, the patriarch who introduced the family to fishing; Norman, who balanced a life divided between literature and the tug of the rugged West; and tragic yet luminous Paul (played by Brad Pitt in Robert Redford’s film adaptation), whose mysterious death has haunted the family and led John to investigate his uncle’s murder and reveal new details in these pages.
A universal story about the power of place to shape families, and a celebration of the art of fishing, Maclean’s memoir beautifully portrays the inextricable ways our personal histories are linked to the places we come from—our home waters.
