Sinopse

Arthur Crazy is hungover, but the dead don't care about headaches.

The city of York is teetering on the edge of disaster. During a rare eclipse, the Shadowman casts a spell atop the Minster, trapping the city between the realm of the living and the dead. Ghosts flood the streets, and Arthur, with his best friend Steve, is the only one who can stop the chaos.

But Arthur's not exactly in hero shape. Haunted by his past and drowning his sorrows in the nearest pint, he's barely keeping it together. That is, until he meets Nae—a beautiful stranger who might just hold the key to helping him feel normal again.

Now, with the Shadowman's spell tearing the veil between worlds, the city's only hope rests on a washed-up hero, a saint from the Shambles, and a dog who won't stop talking. York needs a miracle. Arthur needs another drink.

Or maybe a Panadol and a panini

The celebrated author of The Age of Innocence offers a biting satire of Jazz Age society in this tale of indulgence, infidelity, and family dysfunction. Nona Manford is in love with the wrong man—or at least, she’s in love with a man whose wife won’t grant a divorce. When she isn’t preoccupied with her own romantic dilemma, Nona is busy trying to save the marriage of her stepbrother, Jim. But Jim’s wife, Lita, is desperate to escape her domestic role for a life of dancing, champagne, and glamour. And meanwhile, the family’s older generation isn’t faring much better. An instant bestseller when it was first published in 1927, Edith Wharton’s Twilight Sleep is both a scathing satire of Jazz Age frivolity and a psychologically probing portrait of a family coming apart at the seams.

"Things used to be easier, but even in those carefree days, the rules were in place for a reason. And that reason is: so we can all agree. So we can all have the same standard applied across the board. So there is no special treatment, which no one should receive. This is why we need the rules."

The stories in Avalanche combine humor with an earnest examination and indictment of white entitlement, guilt, shame, and disorientation in the wake of waking up to the reality of racism. Focusing on the perspective of white, cis, straight, and mostly middle-aged and middle-class characters, this collection shines a light on the obliviousness of white privilege, the violence of polite, quiet racism hiding just under the surface of mundane, everyday situations, and the anguished flailing of "well-intentioned white ladies" desperate to confirm their essential goodness at all costs. Westhead writes with compassion and empathy for both her frustrating and frustrated white protagonists and the racialized characters who encounter them, and uses humor not to comfortably distance white readers from the harmful behavior of her self-absorbed protagonists, but to pull them in close to recognize—and reckon with—those familiar parts of themselves, and to become more aware of the insidious systems of white supremacy at work behind the scenes.
