Summary

London 1793: Young firebrand John Pearce is illegally press-ganged from the refuge of the Pelican tavern to a brutal life aboard HMS Brilliant, a frigate on its way to war. In his first few days Pearce discovers the Navy is a world in which he can prosper. But he is not alone; he is drawn to a group of men – fly Charlie Taverner; quiet Ben Walker; tired old Abel Scrivens; the bairn of the group, Rufus Dommet; the droll, tough Irish labourer, Michael O’Hagan; and the bumptious Gherson – pressed men like him, who eventually form an exclusive gun crew, the Pelicans, with Pearce their elected leader. During an action-packed two weeks, as HMS Brilliant chases a French privateer across the English channel, this disparate group of men form friendships that will last a lifetime.

Mary Ann Lamb (1764 – 1847) was an English writer who battled with mental illness all her life. In 1796 during a nervous breakdown, she stabbed her mother to death and was sent to an asylum. Six months afterward, her brother Charles took over her care, and she went to live with him, and the two of them collaborated on many works of literature together. In her own writing, which is often gothic in style, there is a recurrant theme of children who have lost one or both parents in tragic circumstances and who need support in finding their way in the world. In The Sailor Uncle, little Betsy has lost her mother and her father is overwhelmed with grief, though he hides this from his daughter. The surprise visit of her dead mother's brother is at first seen as a threat and annoyance, but gradually the kindly uncle wins Betsy over by teaching her to read books and telling her fascinating stories. A second tragedy looms though, as the Sailor Uncle has to go back to sea...

The expected joy that a few days in a different setting can, and most probably will, make is one of life’s most pleasant pleasures. Usually. But in this volume our classic authors including John Buchan, Edith Wharton, E M Delafield, M R James and a host of others really do seem to want to make some of those few days of indolent pleasure into something rather unpleasant.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (published 1876) is a very well-known and popular story concerning American youth. Mark Twain's lively tale of the scrapes and adventures of boyhood is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn have the kinds of adventures many boys can imagine: racing bugs during class, impressing girls, especially Becky Thatcher, with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting lost in a cave, and playing pirates on the Mississippi River.
