Summary

2024 Michigan Notable Book

***

An Immersive Story of Music, Struggle, and Starting Over from an Award-Winning Author

Michael Sullivan is a talented lyricist and a decent guitarist, but since he was kicked out of his band (and his apartment), he's not sure he'll ever get a record deal. Living with his loser uncle in a beat-up trailer and working a dead-end job, Michael has little reason to hope for a better future. Until the invitation for a swanky New Year's Eve party shows up in the mailbox. It's for his uncle, with whom he shares his name, but his uncle is going out of town . . .

On the effervescent night of December 31, 1989--as the Berlin Wall is coming down, the Soviet Union is inching toward democracy, and anything seems possible--Michael will cross paths with the accomplished and enigmatic young heir to a fading musical dynasty, forever altering both of their futures.

Award-winning novelist Erin Bartels enchants with this story of two lonely souls who have exactly what the other one needs--if they could simply turn their focus from what is ending to what is just beginning.

"Bartels's spirited writing enlivens the earnest tale. Readers will root for these characters as they chase their dreams."--Publishers Weekly

"I was completely absorbed in this book from the first chapter. I sat in my chair and did not get up until I finished it! . . . . Bartels smacks this out of the park."--Interviews & Reviews

“Here at the stud ranch, you’ll learn how to train even the most aggressive males. You’ll learn how to wear away independence, coaxing them into a state of docile obedience.”
It sounded like an incredible opportunity—working as a ranch hand up in the mountains for the summer. I didn’t realize why I was actually hired though…
Alone in the barn with three older ranchers, I stand naked while they run a brush through my hair and tell me what a pretty pony boy I am. It feels so good…I want this.
The heavy scent of their sweat causes my legs to tremble as I sink to the filthy ground. On my hands and knees, I’m ready to be mounted for the first time.
    I’m a college football stallion.
    I’m being broken.

🧵 Fabric shop owner and textile expert Cotton Wright is preparing for the annual Quilter's Convention when the event's main fabric supplier—a ruthless textile magnate—is found dead in her store, buried under a collapsed display of fabric bolts. The police suspect a tragic accident, but Cotton notices the bolts were deliberately cut to weaken them and the victim's order forms contain coded messages about fabric quality. With her shop temporarily closed and the quilting community in chaos, Cotton must measure up as an investigator. Assisted by her quilting bee and the handsome textile chemist analyzing fabric samples, Cotton uncovers a scheme involving counterfeit luxury fabrics, fraudulent fiber content, and a black market for stolen textile designs. From suspicious selvage markings that reveal unauthorized reproduction to dye lots that don't match factory records, every yard tells a story. But when Cotton discovers the victim was systematically diluting luxury fabrics with synthetic fibers while charging premium prices, she realizes the killer is protecting customers from a textile scam more tangled than a knotted thread. With the convention just days away and the real culprit still cutting corners, Cotton must unravel this fabric fiasco before her own bolt gets permanently measured out.

Katherine Mansfield was born on 14th October 1888 into a prominent family in Wellington, New Zealand, the third of five children.

A gifted Celloist, at one point she thought she might take it up professionally at the same time her early writing was published in school magazines.

At 19 Katherine left for home for England, there she met the modernist writers D H Lawrence and Virginia Woolf with whom she became close friends.

She travelled around Europe before returning to New Zealand in 1906 and to begin writing a series of the short stories that she would later become famous for. They often focus on moments of disruption and frequently open rather abruptly.

In contrast her poetry is often overlooked and indeed it comes from seemingly a rather different part of her literary brain. Her observations and language can at times seem innocent, almost child-like. But there are others which give a very different view, another layer to be ventured into and discovered.

By 1908 she had returned to London and to a rather more bohemian lifestyle. A passionate affair resulted in her becoming pregnant but married off instead to an older man who she left the same evening with the marriage unconsummated. She was then to miscarry and be cut out of her mother’s will, allegedly because of her lesbianism.

In 1911 she started a relationship with John Middleton Murry a magazine editor and, although it was volatile, it enabled her to write some of her best stories.

During the First World War Mansfield contracted extrapulmonary tuberculosis, which rendered any return or visit to New Zealand impossible.

Katherine Mansfield died at the age of only 34 on January 9th 1923 in Fontainebleau, France.
