A fundamental requirement of lathe operation, for accuracy and safety, is the ability to hold any workpiece securely and repeatedly on the machine. While few problems arise with straightforward work on a properly aligned lathe, the variety of jobs undertaken by small workshops and model engineers is bound to give rise to occasions when how to hold work requires consideration. When these situations arise and exacting accuracy is essential, working methods and lathe set-up are vital for an acceptable result. The comprehensive manual all aspects of the "whys and hows" including the fundamentals of basic lathe alignment. Topics covered include faceplate work, general chuck work, universal or independent chuck, self-centering chuck, unusual chucks, collets, work steadies, and lathe alignment. The Kofun Period, which lasted from approximately 250 to 600 AD, marks a significant era in early Japanese history. This period is named after the distinct burial mounds, or "kofun," that were constructed during this time. These mounds vary in size and shape but are most commonly recognized for their keyhole-like design. The Kofun Period is pivotal as it represents a time of political consolidation, the development of social structures, and the emergence of a powerful ruling elite that would lay the foundation for the imperial system in Japan.
The beginning of the Kofun Period is closely tied to the formation of more complex societies in the Japanese archipelago. By this time, a system of chiefdoms had developed, and the early Yamato state began to emerge as a dominant political force. The period sees the consolidation of power under a centralized leadership, which eventually paved the way for the establishment of the imperial family that still exists today. During the Kofun Period, society transitioned from small, localized groups to more organized and hierarchical structures, a shift that was reflected in the elaborate tombs built for the elites.
The most notable characteristic of the Kofun Period is the construction of large burial mounds for the ruling class. These tombs were not only elaborate final resting places for powerful individuals but also symbolized the political power and religious authority of the deceased. The kofun mounds varied in size, with some measuring several hundred meters in length. These tombs were often surrounded by moats and would contain a wealth of grave goods, such as weapons, jewelry, and pottery, which reflected both the material culture of the time and the importance of the individual being buried.

The classical era of Japan was defined by a rich interplay of art, power, and evolving traditions, spanning the Nara, Heian, and Kamakura periods. The Nara Period saw the establishment of Japan’s first permanent capital, heavily influenced by Chinese culture, with Buddhism gaining prominence and shaping religious and artistic developments.
The Heian Period marked the height of imperial court culture, where poetry, literature, and refined aesthetics flourished under the rule of aristocratic families like the Fujiwara. It was also during this time that the kana writing system emerged, giving rise to literary masterpieces such as The Tale of Genji. As courtly elegance gave way to the rise of the samurai, the Kamakura Shogunate ushered in a new era of warrior rule, led by the Minamoto clan.
The establishment of a military government transformed Japan’s political landscape, laying the groundwork for feudal society while facing external threats like the Mongol invasions. These three periods together shaped Japan’s cultural and political identity, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to influence the nation today.

In this beautifully illustrated book that's Song of Achilles meets Secret Life of Trees, readers will discover the plants cultivated by the Greek Gods–many of which can still be experimented with today–for a myriad of uses.  In Greek mythology, plants were used for tools, intoxication, warfare, food, medicine, magic, and rituals. When Prometheus stole fire from the Olympian gods and gave it to mankind, he hid it in a stalk of giant fennel. Ancient Greeks waiting to question the oracles were given cannabis as part of their cleansing rituals. A quince fruit started the Trojan war. The goddess Demeter was so distraught when Hades kidnapped her daughter that she caused winter to blanket the earth, killing all plants. Mythic Plants focuses on how the ancient Greeks used plants in their lives and loves and conquests—some of which we can still use. Includes tips throughout for bringing these ancient plants into your garden.
