  Following on from the his first well-received book 'The Kaisers First POWs' Philip Chinnery now turns his attention to the attempts by allied prisoners of war to escape the Kaiser's clutches and return to their homeland. As the war progressed, the treatment of allied prisoners worsened as the blockade of Germany reduced the amount of food and material coming into the country. The majority of the prisoners were too weak or ill-equipped to attempt to escape, but there were others who were determined to pit their wits against their jailers. These included the officers at Holzminden prison, who dug a tunnel allowing twenty-eight of their number to escape; men like Canadian Private Simmons, who escaped and was recaptured twice before his third attempt saw him gain his freedom; men who jumped from moving trains or marched brazenly out of the camp gates disguised as German officers.Although Holland and Switzerland were neutral countries during the First World War, escaping from their camps, crossing miles of enemy territory and outwitting the sentries guarding the frontiers taxed even the strongest individuals. But many men did make the attempt and more than a few of them were successful. This is their story.

The foundation of Rome is traditionally dated to 753 BCE, attributed to the legendary figure Romulus. Over time, Rome evolved through three major phases: the monarchy, the republic, and the empire, each contributing to its dominance. The city's location played a crucial role in its growth, offering natural protection, fertile land, and access to trade routes that facilitated economic and military expansion. 
  During the period of the Roman Kingdom, Rome was ruled by a series of kings, who laid the groundwork for its legal and social structures. However, dissatisfaction with monarchical rule led to the establishment of the Roman Republic in 509 BCE. This new form of government introduced a complex system of checks and balances, with power divided among elected officials, including consuls, senators, and popular assemblies. The republic was built on the idea of civic duty and military service, which helped unify its citizens under a shared sense of identity. It was during this time that Rome expanded its influence, conquering neighboring territories through strategic military campaigns. The Roman legions, known for their discipline and tactical superiority, played a key role in these conquests. 
  Rome’s transition from a republic to an empire was marked by internal conflicts and power struggles. As Rome’s territories expanded, so did the challenges of governance. The late republic saw growing economic inequality, political corruption, and civil wars between powerful leaders. Figures like Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus sought control, leading to the eventual downfall of the republic. The assassination of Caesar in 44 BCE created further instability, but it ultimately paved the way for the rise of Augustus, who became the first emperor in 27 BCE.

  16-year-old Fola Oduwole is scared. She's scared of disappointing her parents, she's scared of not being able to follow her dreams, but most of all she's scared for her brother. He has cancer and his surgery's coming up soon, it could leave him paralysed, or worse. Fola deserves a break, and she gets her wish when she takes the Victoria line one stop too far and is transported to Folkshore, a magical, hidden part of London.
  
  Now she's scared of the talking animals, the mythical Shriekers and not being there when her brother wakes up. Fola wants to go back, but a thunderstorm destroys Folkshore station. As she looks for another way out, Fola stumbles on the local Assembly's nefarious plans. She realises that the only way back to her brother is to help her new friends as they resist the pugnacious police pigs and the authoritarian assembly.
  
  If she fails, the community she's come to love could be destroyed forever and she may never find her way home.
