Summary

It seems the Halloween season starts earlier and earlier each year. I first began noticing Halloween candy in stores in July (!), and every time I turned around since then, there were more decorations, party favors, and treats at hand. Is it any wonder I’ve been wandering around the house humming “The Monster Mash” for the last few weeks?

Our 108th issue kicks off a truly epic celebration of the season, with a pair of nightmarish treats. You will never look at seagulls the same way after experiencing Adrian Cole’s “The Birds Are Back in Town.” And Lin Carter’s “Keru” is a tale that would have been right at home in Weird Tales in its heyday.

“The Power of Evil,” by Alan Orloff, is not a supernatural tale, but futuristic suspense (thanks to Acquiring Editor Michael Bracken), so it’s doing double duty this time. And the grisly-sounding “A Burn That Reaches Bone,” by Karen Odden is not a mad slasher tale, but a tale of a horrible crime that reaches through the generations. (Thanks to Acquiring Editor Barb Goffman for this one.) And, of course, there are traditional mysteries, too—I found a rare Victorian-era mystery by Australian writer Ernest Favenc while I was browsing issues of Australian Town and Country Journal looking for mysteries by Mary Fortune (my favorite classic Australian mystery writer) and couldn’t resist adding it to this issue. Plus we have a detective novel featuring Nick Carter and a solve-it-yourself puzzler from Hal Charles. On the science fiction and fantasy side, we have another great Norman Spinrad story, a classic by Robert F. Young, and the first entry in the Pillsworth & Toffee series by Charles F. Myers (we have more coming up). Fun stuff.

Here’s the complete lineup:

Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure:“The Power of Evil,” by Alan Orloff [Michael Bracken Presents short story]“Swimming into Troubled Waters,” by Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery]“A Burn That Reaches Bone,” by Karen Odden [Barb Goffman Presents short story]“The Mystery of the Death Stroke,” by Ernest FavencThe Forced Crime, by Nicholas Carter [novel]

Young [short story]“Keru,” by Lin Carter“I’ll Dream of You” by Charles F. Myers [short story]

In The City of the Singing Flame by Clark Ashton Smith, science fiction writer Giles Angarth discovers a shimmering gateway in the Sierra Nevada mountains that leads to an alien world of surreal landscapes and towering architecture. Accompanied by composer Felix Ebbonly, he follows a road traversed by strange, otherworldly pilgrims toward a vast city dominated by a mysterious tower of fire that emits a haunting, hypnotic music—the Singing Flame. The music exerts a profound, almost spiritual pull on those who hear it. Drawn by its sublime beauty, Ebbonly eventually walks willingly into the flame and vanishes. Later, Angarth returns through the gateway with a party of seekers, leaving behind a journal that recounts his experiences and suggests he, too, may have succumbed to the Flame’s transcendent allure. The story blends cosmic wonder and metaphysical mystery, evoking themes of otherworldly pilgrimage, ecstatic transformation, and the irresistible call of the unknown.

The winds of change are finally whispering through the Faelan Werewolf Reservation…
Lizzie Grace is doing her utmost to ignore the portents of doom, wanting nothing more than enjoy her life and her time with Aiden O’Connor while she still can. But the song of the once unprotected and very powerful wellspring still washes across the distant shores of darkness, and it continues to draw evil to the reservation.
The one that arrives this time is different from the others. Not only is it skilled in magic, but its kills are very specific. Very targeted. As the brutal deaths mount up and she, Monty, and Aiden struggle to find answers and stop the killings, Lizzie begins to suspect there’s more to this particular evil than meets the eye.
Especially when it helps save the life of a child.
But the biggest threat to Lizzie comes not in the form of evil, but rather the changes whispered on the wind.
Because the werewolf Aiden once asked to be his wife has finally arrived back in the reservation.
And she’s determined to get her man.

Sally Delavega, the best demon-binder the world has ever seen, would do anything to banish the two hundred ghosts trapped in his head—even if it means swimming up from the bottom of his tankard. When the Navy that destroyed his life comes sailing back offering enough coin to get the job done, Sally agrees. All he has to do is help the crew of the Steadfast track down the ancient abyssal that lies sleeping at the heart of their drowned world. Why the Navy wants the demon isn’t Sally’s problem. But as they sail on, Sally begins to dredge up disturbing truths about how the world flooded and their ancient eldritch quarry that might just want to be found…
Imaginative and poignant, funny and bizarre, Demon Engine brings us a bold, queer high-seas adventure that asks how deep we might venture for what we aren’t willing to lose.
