Where were you when the wildfires raged?

In 2023, while flames rushed across Canada and produced the orange haze of an apocalyptic future, twenty-one authors picked up their pens and began to write. Red Eyes and Tired Lungs: An Anthology of Wildfire showcases a collection of thirty-five pieces from Canadian writers that were inspired by, or in response to, wildfire.
Evacuation orders have been issued, and now the flame stalks across the forest. A sweet, lovable dog deals with an evacuation and the after-affects of severe smoke inhalation. What do you grab when you have only minutes to leave? Would you drive into the flames to help a friend save others? Flames shaped like women are luring people to their death, and a podcaster interviews someone who is apparently immune. Does the earth feel like an angry boyfriend about to break up with you? A dryad tries to locate the source of a wildfire and finds a misplaced creature. Can you find the good in a summer drowned in smoke? Will you miss the sounds of disappearing species? What would you do for a delicious can of sugar juice? A little boy listens to what the flames speak. A wildfire firefighter finds herself stalked by flames in two worlds. If you had to decide what could be saved, what would you choose? All these stories, poems, and more explore the many facets of wildfire.

Will you weep for humanity when smoke gets in your eyes?

The Eel by Miriam Allen DeFord - The punishment had to fit more than just the crime—it had to suit every world in the Galaxy!
He was intimately and unfavorably known everywhere in the Galaxy, but with special virulence on eight planets in three different solar systems. He was eagerly sought on each; they all wanted to try him and punish him—in each case, by their own laws and customs. This had been going on for 26 terrestrial years, which means from minus ten to plus 280 in some of the others. The only place that didn't want him was Earth, his native planet, where he was too smart to operate—but, of course, the Galactic Police were looking for him there too, to deliver him to the authorities of the other planets in accordance with the Interplanetary Constitution.
For all of those years, The Eel (which was his Earth monicker; elsewhere, he was known by names indicating equally squirmy and slimy life-forms) had been gayly going his way, known under a dozen different aliases, turning up suddenly here, there, everywhere, committing his gigantic depredations, and disappearing as quickly and silently when his latest enterprise had succeeded. He specialized in enormous, unprecedented thefts. It was said that he despised stealing anything under the value of 100 million terrestrial units, and most of his thefts were much larger than that.
He had no recognizable modus operandi, changing his methods with each new crime. He never left a clue. But, in bravado, he signed his name to every job: his monicker flattered him, and after each malefaction the victim—usually a government agency, a giant corporation, or one of the clan enterprises of the smaller planets—would receive a message consisting merely of the impudent depiction of a large wriggling eel.

What’s a guy gotta do to appease an evil god?
It’s been a year since Katherine tried to take over the world, and Finch Merlin is itching to do something other than odd jobs for Erebus, God of Darkness. Erebus promises he’ll free Finch of his servitude after he completes one final task—finding the Fountain of Youth.
Finch has no idea why Erebus wants eternal youth, since the guy is already an immortal being. All the secrecy makes Finch uneasy, but he has no choice but to obey.
He knows he’ll get by with a little help from his friends, namely his old pal Garrett, who’s still dealing with the whole “being resurrected” thing. There’s also Ryann, Harley’s foster sister, now a regular at the San Diego Coven. Whenever she’s around, Finch feels butterflies in his stomach. Or maybe it’s just a bad case of indigestion.
Together, they’ll infiltrate the flashy world of the magical elite in search of a rare artifact, one that will help them capture a poltergeist—the angry ghost of famed adventurer Ponce de León.
Finch’s adventures have only just begun, with plenty of old and new friends… and foes.

"Why are you here it is not respectful to the dead or family and friends, Mortimer, you can't be here," said the deadman's best friend to a grim reaper who he knew was the soul of the deadman.
"It's my party I can be here, Mass," said the drunk reaper.
"You're drunk, you shouldn't come in," said Max Starfire.
"I'm not drunk! I didn't know you had a twin?" said the reaper looking at an invisible nonexistent man induced by drink.
"I don't I'm an only child," said Max nervously as the reaper pushed passed him.
Mortimer sat with his widow she knew who he was it was awkward.
"We are here to celebrate the life of the dearly departed Blake Alexander," said the Reverand in charge of the funeral who looked at the wailing reaper with suspicion.
