  Ambrose Bierce (1842–c.1914) was an American writer, journalist, and satirist known for his mordant wit and dark humor. Born in Meigs County, Ohio, he served in the Union Army during the Civil War, experiences that deeply influenced his later works. After the war, Bierce moved to San Francisco, where he became a prominent figure in literary circles. He contributed to newspapers and magazines with his sharp, often cynical prose. Bierce is best known for his short story collection "Tales of Soldiers and Civilians," particularly the story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," and his satirical dictionary, "The Devil's Dictionary." His later years were marked by travel to England and Mexico; his disappearance in Mexico around 1913 or 1914 remains one of literature's most famous mysteries. Bierce's legacy includes his contributions to the genres of horror and fantasy and his critical view of human nature.

  Prelude

  "Prelude" is a short story by Katherine Mansfield. It was first published by the Hogarth Press in July 1918, after Virginia Woolf encouraged her to finish the story. Mansfield had begun writing "Prelude" in the midst of a love affair she had in Paris in 1915. It was reprinted in Bliss and Other Stories (1920). The story was a compressed and subtler version of a longer work The Aloe, which was later published posthumously in full.
  The story is based on the Beauchamps' move to Karori, a country suburb of Wellington, in 1893. Alpers says that some readers may not pick up the numerous hints that Linda is pregnant.

  A wealthy and pious couple pray every day for God to grant them a child. One winter, under the juniper tree in the courtyard, the wife peels an apple. She cuts her finger and drops of blood fall onto the snow. This leads her to wish for a child to be as white as snow and as red as blood. Six months later, the wife becomes gravely ill from eating juniper berries and asks her husband to bury her beneath the juniper tree if she dies. A month later, she gives birth to a baby boy as white as snow and as red as blood.
