  قال اللورد بيرون: «من أكبر المصائب على المؤلف أن يترجم إلى لغة أجنبية»؛ ذلك لأنه من المستحيل أن تتفق تراكيب الجمل في مختلف اللغات، والقالب الذي يختاره الكاتب أو الشاعر ليُفرغ فيه معانيه لا يمكن أن يكون واحدًا فيها كلها، وإذا نحن حاولنا أن نترجم ما نريد ترجمته حرفيًّا للمحافظة على القالب ما أمكن أسأنا إلى المؤلف من حيث لا ندري، وإلى أنفسنا بما نقع فيه من غرابة التعبير وركاكة الإنشاء.
  هذا ما نراه كل يوم في أكثر ما نقرؤه في الكتب والمجلات والجرائد من المقالات العلمية والطبية وسواها التي تبدو أعجمية بألفاظ عربية. فالترجمة الحرفية ليست بالطريقة المثلى لحفظ جمال الأصل أو الوصول إلى أثرها في ذهن القارئ العربي. حسب المترجم أن يتفهَّم معاني الكاتب ويدخل في إهابه - إذا سُمح لي بهذا التعبير - ثم يجتهد أن يقدم للقارئ قالبًا عربيًّا لا ينفر منه ذوقه ولا يأباه سمعه.
