Beschreibung

In "Amazing Stories from the History of Ohio (Illustrated)," William Dean Howells artfully weaves a tapestry of Ohio's rich historical narrative, blending anecdotal storytelling with a meticulous attention to detail. His literary style, characterized by a conversational tone and vivid imagery, invites readers to traverse through the significant events and remarkable figures that shaped the Buckeye State. The book serves not only as an entertaining collection of tales but also as an important contribution to regional historical literature, reflecting the zeitgeist of late 19th-century America when local histories were gaining prominence and public interest in state pride was burgeoning. William Dean Howells, a prominent figure in American literature and a staunch advocate for realism, drew from his own experiences growing up in Ohio to craft this work. Howells's background as a journalist and editor, combined with his love for Midwestern culture, informed his deep understanding of local narratives, making him a fitting chronicler of Ohio's historical treasures. His lifelong commitment to representing everyday life and authenticity shines through as he highlights stories often overshadowed by larger historical accounts. Readers who appreciate a blend of history and storytelling will find "Amazing Stories from the History of Ohio (Illustrated)" to be an engaging and enlightening read. This book not only celebrates the essence of Ohio but also enriches the understanding of its socio-cultural fabric, making it a valuable addition to the libraries of history enthusiasts and casual readers alike.

The Conference of the Birds or Speech of the Birds is a Persian poem by Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar, commonly known as Attar of Nishapur. The title is taken directly from the Qur'an, 27:16, where Sulayman and Dāwūd are said to have been taught the language, or speech, of the birds.
In the poem, the birds of the world gather to decide who is to be their sovereign, as they have none. The hoopoe, the wisest of them all, suggests that they should find the legendary Simorgh. The hoopoe leads the birds, each of whom represents a human fault which prevents humankind from attaining enlightenment.

A richly detailed, in-depth look at fixed stars and their role in affecting astrological predictions.    Since prehistory, humanity has been held in thrall by the night sky, captivated by the mystery of the stars. Seeking to make sense of such a magical overhead landscape, people used the stars to relate beliefs, creation stories, and mythologies. And just as the fixed stars have ancient origins in human life, their astrological interpretations get right to the heart of our lives.   Celebrated astrologer Bernadette Brady melds modern astrological techniques with Egyptian and early Greek mythology to bring astrologers to a deeper understanding of the horoscope and provides delineations for using fixed stars in chart interpretation. Her methods open a window on the fixed stars, revealing how a major star in a person’s chart indicates the stage of life in which it is active and how it affirms the person’s life journey through the mythology that the star represents. Though the fixed stars have been watched and studied for all of human history, Brady’s Book of Fixed Stars continues to be the astrological bible for how to use them in practice. This is an essential resource that should be on every astrologer’s bookshelf.  The book includes Paran maps, star maps, star phases, and mythologies for over sixty stars,New insights into the natal use of fixed stars, as well as their use in mundane astrology,Extensive appendices of graphs and tables to help astrologers find rising or setting dates for any given location,And a listing of 176 stars with their 21st-century positions. Originally published by Weiser Books in 1999, this Weiser Classics edition includes a new foreword by Chloe Margherita.

'A delicious, gossipy and thoroughly engaging romp ... heartily recommended.' Tim Tate, author of Hitler's British Traitors and The Spy Who Was Left Out in the Cold
'A captivating page-turner ...' Helen Fry, author of Women in Intelligence

Ambassador's daughter, Nazi love interest, Soviet spy, FBI most wanted.

Accompanying her parents to Berlin in the 1930s, Martha Dodd knew almost nothing about Adolf Hitler or the Nazis. Yet almost overnight, she stepped into the spotlight, and found herself at the over-heated centre of Hitler's 'New Germany', befriending and dating several high-ranking Nazis, including the head of the Gestapo.

An affair with a dashing Russian diplomat saw her recruited as a spy, and so began a long and tumultuous career in both Berlin and America, including attempts to infiltrate First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's inner circle and playing a key role in Henry Wallace's disastrous 1948 presidential campaign.

Betrayed by a Hollywood-hustler-turned-double-agent, Martha spent years under deep FBI surveillance - escaping twice - and went to ground in Cold War Prague, sad, lonely, rich and bored, living out her final decades in a Communist Sunset Boulevard.

Largely forgotten, Martha Dodd began to emerge as an iconic historical figure in the early 2000s. While her scandalous behaviour and pro-Soviet leanings were never much in dispute, the actual matter of her guilt remained unresolved. Now, using recently released KGB archived information and FBI files, author and journalist Brendan McNally sets the record straight in Traitor's Odyssey, telling the full epic tale of Martha Dodd's life for the first time, casting her in a new and bright light.
