  Reflecting on the career of a prominent poet, this biography focuses on Canadian wordsmith Barrie Nichol — more commonly known by his pen name, bpNichol — who was a practicing lay psychoanalyst and vice president of one the largest and long-lasting North American communes for more than a decade. Recognizing his international influence as both a visual and sound poet, Nichol's literary achievements are reviewed, including The Martyrology, a renowned, seven-volume poem, four novels, two musical comedies, six children's books, hundreds of hand-drawn visual poems, and even 10 episodes of Jim Henson's hit television series Fraggle Rock.   My love of poetry was always unrequited. As with all young boys, my English teachers forced me to memorize and recite unintelligible Shakespearean sonnets and turn bad blood into worse ink. For the next half-century, I never gave it a chance. 
  But at the age of 71, poetry came in search of me.  
  The theme of ‘senses’ made sense. As a physician and winemaker, I would try to turn exquisite impressions into exquisite expressions, solvents for the soul dipped in dyes of the heart.  
  There are 17 poems in this sense-ational collection, each with a different form, climbing higher on the sensory evolutionary ladder from the cranial nerves to the prefrontal cortex and beyond.  
  Writing them was like dropping a rose petal into an elevator shaft and waiting for the echo.  
  Read these short, jagged-edged lines as imaginary gardens of joy and pain and wonder, with a dash of dictionary.

  Between the Rocks and the Olive...

  Dear listener, I bare you my heart like an olive tree bares its fruit in the Levant sun. 
  Written in both North Levantine Arabic and English, this is a poetry book on love as I have experienced it. I wrote it with a vision, an image of myself being back on the olive field where my late grandfather used to harvest ripe olives whilst I sat between the rocks and the olive trees.
