This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Willa Cather, an analysis of the literature of a free and empowered woman

First published in 1925, “The Professor's House” is a tale by American novelist Willa Cather about dealing with loss and change.
“The Professor's House” is a novel in three parts and was written over the course of several years. Cather first wrote the centrepiece, “Tom Outland's Story,” and then later wrote the two framing chapters “The Family” and “The Professor” as a continuation of the original plot.

“The Professor's House” follows Godfrey St. Peter, an author and professor, struggling with grief, conflict, and change within his family after the death of a beloved student and his daughter's ex-fiancé, Tom Outland. Within the labyrinth of shattered prisms in Prismforge, where mage heirs awaken arcane powers from crystal spires and arcane citadels rise from chaos of refracted light, heir Aria awakens with a cadre of prism-bound apprentices, their citadel threatened by chaos that scatters spells in shattered beams. The spires, awakened in prism vows and command-kissed facets, reassemble the arcane—or dissolve it in prismatic voids. As they traverse spire-laced mazes and citadel-bound refractions, awakened by chaos weavers and prism rivals, Aria's heir magic fuses with apprentices' bound light, unveiling a prismforge legend of crystal rise. When a fractured prism summons light devouring shades, they must awaken the spires to refract the chaos. In the crystals of arcane spires, where every facet bends the spell and every command focuses the beam, their epic awakening becomes the citadel that illuminates the labyrinth's heart.

Death haunts me. Bloody, violent death.
My name is Kaidance Monroe, and I'm cursed with the gift of sight.
Snatched from obscurity by a figure shrouded in mystery, I've been sculpted into an instrument of vengeance, my visions sharpened like blades to serve his dark vendetta. Yet, within the walls of my sanctuary-turned-prison, secrets as dark as the night whispered of betrayals too deep, forcing me to flee. Now, I'm ensnared in a web spun from the threads of loyalty and power, torn between the fallen angel whose protection burns with a forbidden intensity and the divine beings who vie to ensnare me in their celestial plots. Pursued by Zeus's relentless warriors, with monstrous entities thirsting for my blood, I'm haunted by the absence of the one whose soul is entwined with mine—the one I'm compelled to escape from and drawn irresistibly towards.
With the mythical Golden Shears now within my grasp, I wield a power that could topple Olympus itself. The fate of gods and mortals hangs in the balance, hinging on my decision. Love, loyalty, and revenge are about to collide, and I'm right at the heart of it.
