Synopsis

A Novel Approach to Learning Guitar Chord Progressions This treatise seeks to encourage guitarists of all levels to find their voice by experimenting and creating chordal ideas by playing notes on any part of the fingerboard to come up with their own chord shapes and patterns and not necessarily familiar, geometric shapes. These chord progressions can express an emotion or tone, be it sad, happy, humorous, mysterious, and the next step is to use an online chord app (if needed) to determine the names of the chords that were created. Guitarists who compose instrumental pieces will not be limited by conventional chord shapes but can come up with unusual chordal ideas that highlight their creative and compositional abilities against a background of shapes and patterns. "This is interesting! I am an intermediate-level guitar player, and I am only familiar with moving basic chord shapes vertically, but I do think it would have been very useful if I had been familiar with these chord shapes, and this concept of moving them horizontally, earlier in my learning process." -- Dennis Dezentje, The Netherlands "I have read this book repeatedly and found it quite interesting. It did not take long to recognize the genius it unleashed. As I explored Persaud's Geometric Patterns, Angles and the Guitar and applied its principles, I most certainly wished I had had access to it much earlier during my exposure to advanced guitar methods." -- Hezekiah Dean, District Superintendent of Education (retired), Bahamas "This method can revolutionize the way a student is taught to play a musical instrument. Many students have problems processing words. For many of them, learning through visualizing shapes and the pattern of movements will be easier because the concept is more concrete. Geometric Patterns, Angles and the Guitar will have great success with both tactile and visual learners." -- Mary Moncur Grey, B.A., Dip Ed., MBA "The author provides an interesting geometrical concept, something that the mathematically oriented guitarist will certainly appreciate. Geometric Patterns, Angles and the Guitar will open up a less-trodden path for guitarists, allowing them to explore chord construction, sounds and tonalities. Welcome to music creativity beyond basic music theory." --Rehman Abdul, M.S., P. Eng., Geotechnical Engineer

In this reflective and enriching memoir, John Tuomey navigates the places and memories of his life over the scope of twenty-five years. First recognised for the urban regeneration of Dublin's Temple Bar, which included the construction of the Irish Film Institute, the National Photographic Archive and Gallery of Photography, his life in architecture led him to design social and cultural spaces such as the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, the Glucksman Gallery in UCC and the Victoria & Albert East Museum in London.

Imbued with many inter-textual references to poetry, drama and literature and written in limpid prose, this memoir is inherently literary in nature. Tuomey looks back to his early life where he was born in Tralee and lived in different counties around Ireland, from small towns to country landscapes, from schooldays in Dundalk to student activism at University College Dublin. He traces the pathways that led to his formation as an architect, reflecting on the many cultural and social influences on his life. He excels in capturing the social landscape of Dublin in the 1980s and pays particular attention to the many buildings and social hubs of the inner city. His transient years of moving from Dublin to London, and subsequently working in places like Nairobi and Milan, chronicle the international influences on his outlook. The key relationships in his life, including meeting his future wife, Sheila – a fellow student of architecture in UCD – and his pivotal employment by James Stirling in 1976, form the backbone of his personal and professional life.

Tuomey's expertise in his field is unsurpassed, with meticulous detail given to the finer aspects of design and architecture. His thoughts on the challenges facing the encroaching erasure of city life in Dublin are essential reading for anyone with an interest in the future of building in the city.

An Artist's Look at Theology, Art, and Philosophy
    Dear Tom,
Thanks for writing again—and for this unusually philosophical response to my letter! In response: my theology of art is my theology. Period. I think of God as the Artist and all human artists as eternal apprentices. Consequently, all my thinking about God involves the centrality of beauty and the act of making. As I've said many times, we were made by a Maker to be makers. . . .
    Bruce
In a series of fictional letters, respected artist and educator Bruce Herman passes on wisdom to a younger generation. He explores a wide array of practical, philosophical, and theological issues, such as:

    - What is art versus craft? What is good art?
    - What is the calling of an artist? Of a Christian artist?
    - What do you do when you're stuck in your creative process?
    - How should Christians relate to the contemporary art scene?
    - What is beauty, and how is it relevant in our world?
Full of personal stories and behind-the-scene looks at Herman's own artistic process, Makers by Nature also features full-color artwork by Herman and several of his former students. Artists and art lovers will find insight, wonder, and encouragement to consider the Maker's invitation to creativity, however it takes shape.

Beyond a mere introduction to great art, Van Gogh Has a Broken Heart is about loving to learn what art has to teach us about the wonder and struggle of being alive.
Did you know that:Vincent van Gogh's attempt to start an artist's colony with Paul Gauguin lasted only nine weeks, ending in his infamous "ear episode"?Pablo Picasso was a prime suspect in the disappearance of the Mona Lisa?Artemisia Gentileschi was tortured with thumbscrews to verify her testimony at her own rapist's trial?Norman Rockwell's critics said his work would never be accepted as "high art"--and he agreed?

These stories--and many more--shaped the work these artists left behind. In their art are lessons common to the human experience about the wonder and struggle of being alive: dreams lost, perspectives changed, and humility derived through suffering.??
In Van Gogh Has a Broken Heart, Russ Ramsey digs into these artists' stories for readers who may be new to art, as well as for lifelong students of art history, to mine the transcendent beauty and hard lessons we can take from their masterpieces and their lives. Each story from some of the history's most celebrated artists applies the beauty of the gospel in a way that speaks to the suffering and hope we all face.
