Beschreibung

In 'Psycho-Analysis and the War Neuroses,' the profound impact of war on the psyche is dissected through a rich tapestry of perspectives. This collection delves into the complex interplay between trauma and mind, reflecting on the clinical and theoretical developments that define early 20th-century psychoanalytic thought. The anthology captures a range of styles, from the rigorous scientific analysis to more narrative-driven explorations, each contributing uniquely to the overarching theme of war-induced psychological distress. The standout pieces not only underscore theoretical advancements but also reveal the human dimension behind clinical observations, offering a nuanced understanding of trauma's enduring effects. The contributing authors stand at the forefront of psychoanalytic evolution, each bringing distinct insights molded by their backgrounds and intellectual quests. Renowned figures such as Sigmund Freud, Ernest Jones, Karl Abraham, Sándor Ferenczi, and Ernst Simmel play pivotal roles, weaving their observations into a cohesive dialogue that aligns with the broader psychoanalytic movement and its historical context. The collection harmonizes these varied perspectives, reflecting on their shared mission to interpret and alleviate war's psychological toll, thus enlightening readers on the multifaceted nature of neuroses born of conflict. By assembling these pioneering works, the anthology offers an unparalleled opportunity for readers to engage with diverse psychoanalytic paradigms in one volume. It is a foundational text for those interested in the convergence of psychology, history, and social science, presenting educational insights into the development of therapeutic practices and the persistent quest to understand war's impact on the human mind. This anthology is an essential addition for anyone aiming to comprehend the intricate dialogues between early psychoanalytic theorists and the pervasive pathologies of war.

Investigating the unsolved murder of a female law student and the pervasive violence against Guatemalan women that drives migration.

Part memoir and part forensic investigation, Textures of Terror is a gripping first-person story of women, violence, and migration out of Guatemala—and how the United States is implicated. Accompanying Jorge Velásquez in a years-long search for answers after the brutal murder of his daughter Claudina Isabel, Victoria Sanford explores what it means to seek justice in "postconflict" countries where violence never ended.

Through this father's determined struggle and other stories of justice denied, Textures of Terror offers a deeper understanding of US policies in Latin America and their ripple effect on migration. Sanford offers an up-close appraisal of the inner workings of the Guatemalan criminal justice system and how it maintains inequality, patriarchy, and impunity. Presenting the stories of other women who have suffered at the hands of strangers, intimate partners, and the security forces, this work reveals the deeply gendered nature of power and violence in Guatemala.

The Ottoman conquest of Constantinople played a decisive role in fostering the Renaissance in Western Europe. The Byzantine Empire’s influence had helped ensure that it was the custodian of various ancient texts, most notably from the ancient Greeks, and when Constantinople fell, Byzantine refugees flocked west to seek refuge in Europe. Those refugees brought books that helped spark an interest in antiquity that fueled the Italian Renaissance and essentially put an end to the Middle Ages altogether.
It was also roughly around this time that a period of European exploration began, and major factors that contributed to this period of exploration were introduced by the Chinese, albeit indirectly. The magnetic compass had already been developed and used by the Chinese sailors since the 12th century, although it had first been created in the 3rd century BCE as a divination device. The Song Dynasty then began using the device for land navigation in the 11th century and sailors began using it shortly after. The technology slowly spread west via Arab traders, although a case can be made for the independent European creation for the compass (Southey 1812: 210). Regardless, by the 13th century the compass had found its way to Western traders, coming at a time that trade had been increasing across Europe.
The Portuguese started exploring the west coast of Africa and the Atlantic under orders from Prince Henry the Navigator. At this point, Europeans had not yet been capable of navigating completely around Africa since the ships being built were not yet fully capable of being able to sail very far from the coast and navigation in open waters was difficult, but the Portuguese continued pushing down the western African coast looking for ways to bypass the Ottomans and Muslims of Africa who had been making overland trade routes difficult. .

In Libya and Yemen armed groups play a central role. Pervading weak and contested institutions, they have gradually brought their webs of survival, profit and governance under the state umbrella: warlords have become the new lords of the state. Armed groups control most of the energy revenues, critical infrastructure, smuggling and illicit trafficking. Their leaders are multifaceted: they are simultaneously military commanders, tribal chiefs, politicians and businessmen.
Combining comparative analysis and case studies, this Report sheds light on the "economic face" of the armed groups and their power trajectories. How do armed groups build networks of profit and loyalty in the territories they hold? How does clientelism mark a continuity trend with former authoritarian regimes?
