Synopsis

The Book of Micah is generally considered one of the older surviving books of the Israelite Scriptures, with most scholars dating it to before the Torah was compiled, or at least heavily redacted in the time of King Josiah. Most scholars accept that Micah was written by a prophet called Micah sometime between 737 and 698 BC, who was most likely from the town of Moresheth in the Kingdom of Judah or the city-state of Gath, in the modern Palestinian West Bank. His world was very different from the later Kingdom of Judea that emerged in the 2nd century BC, as the Israelites of his time were still polytheistic, worshiping the Canaanite gods, as well as statues of Yahweh, the God the Jews and Samaritans would later worship. While the Book of Micah is accepted by many as dating to the 8th century BC, the oldest fragments of it to survive to the present are Hebrew fragments of the Sheneim Asar found among the Dead Sea Scrolls written in the Aramaic script, dating to the Hasmonean era, and fragments of the Dôdeka dating to the same era. The Dôdeka’s fragments are quite similar to the later copies of Amos in the Septuagint manuscripts, and the Hebrew fragments found within the Dead Sea Scrolls are generally the same as the Aleppo Codex’s Amos, which shows the surviving texts have been copied accurately since around 100 BC.All versions of the Book of Micah include strange text that are accepted as relics of ancient spelling errors. Most of these appear to have originated in a Demotic Egyptian translation that all modern versions of Micah descend from. There are a few Demotic Egyptian texts, such as Papyrus Amherst 63, which include polytheistic Israelite psalms dating to between the 7ᵗʰ and 3ʳᵈ century BC. During and after the Assyrian conquest of Samaria, and the Babylonian conquest of Judah, Israelites fled to Egypt, as well as the Carthage and other countries across the Mediterranean. The most obvious of these spelling errors is the reference to the daughters of Anat in chapter 1.

Within every individual exists a spark waiting to be awakened, a latent power capable of transforming ordinary moments into extraordinary opportunities. In this chapter we delve into the profound journey of self-discovery and inspiration that begins with igniting the flame of passion. This is not just a metaphorical ignition but a call to recognize and harness the intrinsic energy that lies at the core of our being. It is an invitation to awaken the dormant potential that fuels our ambitions and propels us toward a more purposeful existence.
The process of igniting this inner flame starts with deep introspection and cultivating self-awareness. By taking the time to reflect on our experiences, desires, and inherent talents we create a clear vision of who we are and what we aspire to achieve. Such clarity lays the foundation upon which a life filled with meaning and passion is built. The journey of self-discovery challenges us to question old assumptions, step beyond familiar boundaries, and open our minds to possibilities that once seemed unreachable.
Embracing vulnerability plays a crucial role in this transformative process. It is only by allowing ourselves to feel deeply and confront our fears that we can truly kindle the fire within. Every setback or moment of uncertainty becomes an opportunity for growth—a chance to refine our vision and strengthen our resolve. Through this continuous cycle of reflection and bold action the initial spark of passion evolves into a steady blaze that illuminates our path forward.

    Savoring Scripture - A Six-Step...

Some books on how to read the Bible are academically informative, but their rationality can make God seem distant. Other books are spiritually vibrant but provide few tools that truly help God's people read the Bible better. Readers need a guide that combines the academic with the spiritual—that integrates textual analysis with the illuminating and transformational work of the Holy Spirit.
Drawing from his experience training students to study the Bible, Andrew Abernethy provides a holistic method that helps readers listen carefully to what God was saying to the original audience and what God is saying to us today. Using clear examples, he lays out six steps:

    - Posture
    - Flow
    - Context
    - Whole Bible
    - Savor God
    - Faithful response
Chapters provide guidance on interpreting biblical genres, factoring in historical backgrounds, reading each passage in context, tracing the redemptive storyline of Scripture, and more. Then, building on a strong grasp of Scripture's meaning, readers engage the traditional practice of lectio divina and consider how to respond faithfully to the text. The goal, Abernethy says, is to encounter God and to be shaped by the Word as we savor its richness.
Filled with practical features such as illustrations, maps, timelines, and discussion questions, Savoring Scripture is a valuable guide for students and anyone who wants to study the Bible more effectively. God has given us a Bible that is for the hungry—for those willing both to depend on God for provision and to put in the mental effort to enjoy the feast.
